Advanced civilization has continuously generated reproduction and consumption, resulting in an age of excess. While individuals possess more than ever before, they simultaneously experience an increasing sense of emptiness. Within contemporary consumer society, objects no longer function primarily through their utility or essence; rather, they are consumed as signs. Furthermore, human relationships and individuals themselves are increasingly reduced to consumable entities. The outcomes produced under the notions of development and growth resemble a structure that accumulates emptiness while outwardly promising abundance. This study originated from the researcher’s recognition of the multilayered problems embedded in social relationships experienced in everyday life within such a social environment. This awareness extended beyond the individual level to encompass the structural conditions of contemporary society as a whole. Based on Jean Baudrillard’s theory of The Consumer Society, this study examines the characteristics of consumption in contemporary society and seeks to visualize a social structure in which consumption operates through signs rather than through function or essence. To achieve this, traditional ceramic forms are combined with contemporary visual art discourses. As the primary formal foundation of the study, the flat bottle (Pyeonbyeong) was adopted. Through its flattened body, bilateral structure, angular sides, and decorative elements, the formal characteristics of flatness, duality, and ornamentality were identified. These ambivalent characteristics correspond to the structure of signs operating within contemporary consumer society. In addition, Neo-Pop, a contemporary visual art movement, incorporates images of mass consumer culture and is characterized by appropriation, rearrangement, and reproduction. Its visual language provides possibilities for interpreting the structure of signs in consumer society while resonating with the formal characteristics of the flat bottle. Accordingly, this study employed Neo-Pop aesthetics to reconstruct the mechanisms through which signs operate in consumer society onto the surface of the flat bottle, thereby proposing a new formal interpretation. The production process primarily utilized slab-building techniques to reveal consumption as an intentional process of sign operation within contemporary consumer society. The two surfaces of the flat bottle were conceived as pictorial fields capable of visual expression, allowing the multilayered nature of signs to be represented. Furthermore, various ceramic colors and techniques were employed with reference to preceding Neo-Pop artists in order to embody Neo-Pop visual language. Rather than merely reproducing images, the works focused on structuring them as reconstructed signs. The artworks were categorized into three formal types derived from the sign-operating strategies observed in Neo-Pop artists: Flattening (A), Latentization (B), and Excessification (C). Flattening (A) expressed the simplification of signs through juxtaposition and reduction within consumer society. Latentization (B) represented conditions in which meaning is diminished or concealed through the transformation and omission of signs. Excessification (C) visualized the excessive state of signs continuously reproduced in consumer society through repetitive and proliferating imagery. Therefore, this study interpreted the contemporary structure of consumer society through the traditional ceramic form of the flat bottle and the visual language of Neo-Pop, and translated this interpretation into ceramic form. The findings demonstrate that traditional vessel forms such as the flat bottle can function as media capable of accommodating and reconstructing contemporary socio-cultural phenomena. Furthermore, the study suggests the possibility of developing new formal languages through the convergence of traditional ceramics and contemporary visual culture, while demonstrating that traditional ceramics can serve as an expressive medium for interpreting and re-articulating contemporary society.
