A Study on the Construction of a Phenomenological ‘Atmosphere’ Evaluation Model in the Transition Space of Art Museum Chun Jihyeon Advisor : Prof. Yoon Gab-geun, Ph.D. Department of Design, Graduate School of Chosun University This study attempted to conceptualize the transition space, which was previously recognized only as a functional role in the construction of a modern art museum space, as a field to perceive the phenomenological atmosphere, and to establish an evaluation model to empirically verify this. To this end, based on the spatial phenomenology of a perceptual perspective and Gernot Böhme's atmosphere theory, a quantitative empirical analysis was attempted for the first time by manipulating the phenomenological atmosphere of the museum's transition space into a variable that can be perceived. Based on the theoretical foundation, a draft questionnaire on phenomenological atmosphere perception was drawn through literature review, and the questionnaire was refined through feedback after conducting interviews with experts in indoor, spatial design, architecture, and art museum design. Through this, independent variables were classified into generative, mutual, and directing factors as factors of phenomenological perception of the transition space of the art museum, emotional factors were systematized as mediating effects, and phenomenological atmosphere perception was set as a dependent variable to establish a research model and hypothesis. The empirical analysis was conducted on indoor, spatial design, and architecture majors and non-majors who experienced the transition space of the art museum, and finally statistical verification was conducted with SPSS and AMOS based on 307 valid samples. As a result of the analysis, high validity (KMO=.936) and reliability were secured through factor analysis of the measurement tool. As a result of the hypothesis test, it was verified that the directing, generative, and mutual factors of the transition space of the museum had a significant effect on the perception of the phenomenological atmosphere. In addition, it was confirmed that the emotional factor mediates the perception of the phenomenological atmosphere, which is an independent variable and a dependent variable. Through this, it was confirmed that the physicality of the space induces more in-depth psychological changes in emotional sensitivity than is directly perceived by the user, and phenomenological atmosphere perception can be achieved. In addition, the hypothesis on the moderating effect of the major field and visit purpose was rejected, which means that the atmosphere of the art museum transition space in the sample of this study was perceived similarly without significant difference according to the respondent's background, and showed the possibility that the atmosphere would have a quasi-objective characteristic that jointly exists. However, the difference in perception according to the residence time can be interpreted as a result of reflecting the accumulation of time in the space. It is unfortunate that the discrimination validity was not satisfied due to the high correlation between latent variables shown in the analysis process of this study, but conversely, the phenomenological atmosphere space experience can be interpreted as a fusion of multidimensional factors. This study expanded the study by quantitatively quantifying spatial phenomenology and atmospheric aesthetics, which have been dealt with only qualitative research, and is expected to contribute practically and academically to the field of art museum architecture, space design, and exhibition design in that it proposes guidelines to practice spatial uniqueness through aesthetic production of the museum's transition space.
