With the development of urbanization and globalization, complex public spaces such as airports and transportation hubs are becoming increasingly complicated in terms of spatial structure and information environment. In such environments, users are required to select necessary information and determine movement directions within a limited amount of time, making the information organization of public space signage systems an important factor. In particular, graphic symbols are widely used as representative visual elements that transcend language and cultural barriers, playing an important role within the information structure of public spaces. However, previous studies have mainly focused on the formal characteristics or symbolism of graphic symbols, while relatively few studies have examined how graphic symbols form relationships within the information structures of complex public space environments.
This study aims to analyze the visual characteristics and information organization methods of graphic symbols used in public space signage systems and to examine how these visual structures are related to users’ immediate information recognition and instant information cognition. To achieve this, Gestalt visual perception theory and cognitive load theory were adopted as the theoretical foundations, and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport Terminal 2 was selected as the case study for analysis. In particular, this study focused on how graphic symbols form visual structures through their integration with color systems, information hierarchy, spatial layout, directional information, and circulation flow.
The results of the study indicate that graphic symbols in public space signage systems do not function as isolated visual elements, but rather are organized within the overall information structure through their combination with color contrast, information hierarchy, directional information, and spatial circulation. In particular, structures in which directional arrows and graphic symbols were repeatedly combined showed relatively clear visual relationships between directional and functional information, while color contrast and information grouping contributed to the visual differentiation of information elements. On the other hand, environments characterized by high information density and the simultaneous presentation of multiple visual elements tended to exhibit increased complexity in information structures. Furthermore, graphic symbols were found to function not only as functional markers but also as visual elements that connect spatial information and circulation flow while supporting immediate information recognition.
This study is significant in that it examines graphic symbols in public space signage systems as visual elements that are integrally organized within information structures and spatial environments. In addition, the study suggests the potential for graphic symbol research that simultaneously considers information structures and visual environments in public spaces, and it is expected to provide foundational reference material for future studies in public information design and wayfinding systems.
