Ammonia has attracted significant attention as a clean fuel with zero carbon emissions for achieving carbon neutrality targets, however, its application to small engines is severely limited due to fundamental combustion constraints including extremely low flame propagation speed, high minimum ignition energy, and narrow flammability range. To overcome these challenges, this research converted an 800cc two-cylinder small gasoline engine to liquid ammonia port-injection engine and applied Passive Turbulent Jet Ignition technology to dramatically improve ammonia combustion characteristics. In the Basic Research stage, pre-chamber geometric design optimization was performed under fixed in-cylinder conditions. Through equivalence ratio analysis, Φ = 1.1 was identified as optimal condition achieving cylinder peak temperature of 2071 K and maximum heat release rate of 8264 J/sec, and optimal values of orifice diameter, angle, and number were derived by applying One Factor At a Time and Full Factorial Design methodologies. Single- orifice analysis identified diameter range of 2.5 mm to 3.0 mm as optimal, and at 60° orifice angle, multi-point ignition effect was maximized through simultaneous flame propagation toward both piston bowl and cylinder wall. The optimal design of 2.0 mm diameter, 6 orifices, 60° angle achieved peak temperature of 2146 K and maximum heat release rate of 24627 J/sec, representing approximately 3 times per-cycle heat release rate improvement compared to SI ammonia. Notably, through synergistic effects of multi-orifice configuration, stable flame ejection was realized even at small diameter conditions that were impossible with single- orifice design due to flame quenching, and hot flame jets discharged simultaneously from six orifices distributed uniformly within main cylinder, maximizing combustion efficiency. In the Application Research stage, the optimized pre-chamber was applied to engine cycle conditions and overall performance was evaluated across entire engine speed range from 1600 rpm to 3000 rpm. Under full-load conditions, spark timing improved from extreme range of −70° aTDC to realistic range of −20° aTDC, maximum cylinder pressure increased from approximately 50 bar to 76.7~83.7 bar, and combustion duration was shortened by above 50% across entire engine speed range: 64.3% reduction at 1600 rpm, 61.0% reduction at 2000 rpm, 55.3% reduction at 2500 rpm, and 53.6% reduction at 3000 rpm. In turbulence intensity analysis, in-cylinder turbulent kinetic energy of PTJI ammonia engine increased from SI ammonia's 14.6 m²/s² to 78.3 m²/s², approximately 5.4 times higher and approximately 1.4 times greater compared to SI gasoline's 55.4 m²/s². At high-speed condition of 3000 rpm, extremely high turbulent kinetic energy of approximately 173.4 m²/s² was generated in pre- chamber and transferred to main cylinder, serving as the core mechanism for overcoming ammonia's extremely low flame propagation speed through expanding flame surface area, enhancing turbulent diffusivity, and accelerating reaction rates. Emission characteristics revealed important trade-off relationship between unburned ammonia and NOx. SI ammonia engine recorded extremely low NOx approximately 24~95 ppm due to incomplete combustion, but discharged extremely high unburned ammonia slip - xxiii - approximately 7,583~29,998 ppm. Conversely, PTJI ammonia engine reduced unburned ammonia by approximately 98.6% through complete combustion achievement, but NOx increased approximately 88.4% to 208 ppm to 401 ppm level. This results from extremely high temperatures from complete oxidation and simultaneous activation of ammonia's fuel-bound nitrogen pathway, effectively controllable through aftertreatment technology such as Selective Catalytic Reduction. Part-load evaluation results revealed optimal fuel economy of approximately 577 g/kWh or below in mid-load region, validating practical value as design optimization point. Conversely, low-load and high-speed conditions revealed performance constraints due to in-cylinder turbulence intensity reduction and combustion time constraints, and derived operating range map demonstrated that favorable fuel economy region below 700 g/kWh is limited to mid-load range at 1600 rpm to 2000 rpm. In conclusion, this research quantitatively demonstrated that Passive Turbulent Jet Ignition multi-orifice technology effectively overcomes combustion constraints of ammonia's extremely low flame propagation speed and high minimum ignition energy, enabling practical realization in small engines. PTJI ammonia engine simultaneously achieved realistic spark timing, improved power output, combustion duration reduction exceeding 50%, and unburned ammonia slip reduction exceeding 98% compared to extremely unstable SI ammonia, providing practical solution for small engine transition toward carbon-neutral energy era. The derived operating range and optimal orifice design will serve as baseline data for future ammonia engine development, particularly indicating mid-load optimization strategy and improvement directions for low-load and high-speed conditions.
