Application of CNT/CF Composite Anodes for Corrosion Monitoring and Elec- trochemical Chloride Extraction in Chloride-Exposed Reinforced Concrete Emiru Michael Tesfaye, B.Sc Advisor: Prof. Hyeong-Ki, Kim, Ph.D. Department of Architectural Engineering Graduate School of Chosun University Chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcing steel remains one of the most critical deterioration mechanisms affecting reinforced concrete structures exposed to marine environments and deicing salt. Considering the conductive behaviors of cementitious composites this thesis investigates the dual application of carbon nanotube–carbon fiber (CNT–CF) cement composites as both corrosion monitor- ing electrodes and electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE) anodes. The first phase of the study evaluates the reliability of CNT–CF cement com- posite reference electrodes for monitoring chloride-induced corrosion in rein- forced mortar and concrete specimens. The electrochemical response of the composite was characterized under chloride-contaminated, carbonated, and sat- urated conditions to establish its stability in aggressive environments. Corrosion activity was assessed using open-circuit potential (OCP) and linear polarization resistance (LPR) measurements on 150 mm cubic reinforced mortar specimens subjected to accelerated chloride penetration in accordance with NT Build 492, and on full-scale reinforced concrete beams of 0.8 m and 2.0 m length subjected to long-term immersion exposure following NT Build 443. The second phase investigates the performance of CNT–CF cement compo- site anodes for ECE in reinforced mortar specimens previously subjected to ac- celerated chloride ingress. Three anode systems were evaluated comparatively (titanium mesh, a stainless-steel plate, and a CNT–CF cement composite bar). ECE was performed by applying a current density of 2 A/m² for 5 consecutive days in accordance with EN 14038-2, and residual chloride profiles were quanti- fied using both EPMA mapping and acid-soluble chloride analysis at 2 mm depth intervals. In the depth range beyond 16mm all three anodes produced comparable chlo- ride extraction profiles with similar extraction efficiencies. However, within the shallow cover region the CNT–CF composite anode exhibited higher residual chloride concentrations than the metallic anodes. This reduced near surface effi- ciency was attributed to the progressive increase in electrical resistance of the CNT–CF composite during ECE, driven by the formation of chloride-based AFm phases, particularly Friedel's salt, within the composite structure. Thermogravi- metric analysis, mercury intrusion porosimetry, and X-ray diffraction confirmed the consumption of portlandite and formation of Friedel's salt as the primary mi- crostructural changes responsible for the resistance increase. The third phase presents a three-dimensional finite element model developed in COMSOL Multiphysics to simulate chloride ion transport during rapid chloride penetration and ECE under multiple anodes. The model showed good agreement with experimental chloride profiles, although discrepancies were observed near the exposed surface and rebar surface. The result demonstrates that CNT–CF cement composites offer a promising multifunctional platform for integrated corrosion monitoring and electrochemical remediation in chloride-contaminated reinforced concrete structures, and that fi- nite element modeling provides a reliable predictive framework for evaluating chloride transport and extraction efficiency under different anode configurations, provided that appropriate material characterization data are incorporated
