The Harmony Search (HS) algorithm is a metaheuristic optimization method inspired by the improvisation process of musicians. Owing to its simple structure, derivative-free search mechanism, and small number of control parameters, HS has been applied to a wide range of nonlinear, non-differentiable, and combinatorial optimization problems. Nevertheless, the actual performance of HS depends strongly on internal factors such as the Harmony Memory Considering Rate (HMCR), Pitch Adjusting Rate (PAR), Harmony Memory Size (HMS), pitch adjustment bandwidth, variable search ranges, and candidate-solution representation. In real-world applications, the structure of the objective function, constraints, and decision variables varies significantly from problem to problem; therefore, direct application of the original HS algorithm is often insufficient to obtain efficient and robust search performance.
This dissertation integrates a series of studies on the performance enhancement and problem-specific application of the HS algorithm. First, the fundamental structure of HS is reviewed, and the effects of HMCR and PAR are analyzed through extensive experiments using benchmark
functions and real-world design optimization problems. The results show that the performance of HS is generally more sensitive to HMCR than to PAR, and that high HMCR values tend to provide stable performance.
However, an extreme value such as HMCR = 1.0 may eliminate random generation entirely and may degrade performance due to the loss of exploration capability.
Second, this dissertation investigates operator-level improvements of HS.
The improved pitch adjustment operator evaluates the original value and bidirectionally adjusted candidates and selects the best candidate, thereby converting pitch adjustment from a simple stochastic perturbation into a local candidate-selection mechanism. In addition, a variable range reduction strategy is discussed as a way to concentrate search resources on promising regions as the search progresses. The strategy can improve convergence efficiency, but excessive or premature range reduction may damage the global search capability.
Third, the dissertation develops problem-specific HS algorithms for two distinct applications: Nonogram puzzles and photovoltaic maximum power point tracking (MPPT). For Nonogram puzzles, clue-constrained random generation and initially confirmed cell scanning are introduced to reduce invalid candidate solutions and shrink the combinatorial search space. For MPPT under partial shading conditions, a parameter-setting-free HS scheme and a reduced-range operator are combined to exploit the single-decision-variable structure of the problem and reduce
convergence time while maintaining tracking accuracy.
The overall conclusion is that the performance enhancement of HS should not be understood merely as the search for a fixed set of good parameter values. Instead, effective HS design requires a systematic understanding of parameter sensitivity, improvement of basic operators, and problem-specific incorporation of structural information. This dissertation provides a coherent framework for extending HS from a general-purpose metaheuristic to a problem-adaptive optimization method.
