The purpose of this study was to analyze the measurement characteristics of leader trust, positive psychological capital, and perceived performance scales among Taekwondo demonstration team members based on item response theory, and to verify the structural model among these variables. Data from 856 Taekwondo demonstration team members were used for the final analysis. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, graded response model-based item parameter estimation, item fit analysis, local independence analysis, test information functions, structural equation modeling, bootstrapping for mediation effects, and multi-group analysis.
The results were as follows. First, the leader trust, positive psychological capital, and perceived performance scales showed generally acceptable reliability and factor structure. The reliability coefficients of the three scales were high, and the confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the measurement model had an acceptable fit. Second, the graded response model analysis showed that the items of each scale generally had acceptable item discrimination and ordered threshold parameters. This indicates that the five-point Likert response categories functioned relatively appropriately according to the level of latent traits. Third, although some items showed statistically significant item-fit indices, no serious problems requiring item deletion were identified when RMSEA.S-X², item parameters, ordered thresholds, local independence, and test information functions were considered together. Fourth, the test information function results showed that each scale provided different levels of measurement precision across the latent trait continuum, offering item-level measurement information that could supplement total-score-based interpretation. Fifth, the structural model analysis showed that leader trust had a significant positive effect on positive psychological capital, and positive psychological capital had a significant positive effect on perceived performance. However, the direct effect of leader trust on perceived performance was not statistically significant. Sixth, the mediation analysis confirmed that positive psychological capital significantly mediated the relationship between leader trust and perceived performance. Seventh, the multi-group analysis by team affiliation type revealed differences in some structural paths between university demonstration teams and non-university demonstration teams. In particular, the effect of leader trust on positive psychological capital was stronger in the non-university demonstration team group.
Taken together, these findings suggest that the perceived performance of Taekwondo demonstration team members is more likely to be explained through the indirect path of positive psychological capital rather than by the direct effect of leader trust. This study has academic significance in that it examined the item-level functioning and measurement precision of psychological and performance-related scales before verifying the structural relationships among the variables. From a practical perspective, the findings suggest that coaching strategies for improving the performance of Taekwondo demonstration team members should not only strengthen leader trust but also enhance positive psychological capital, including self-efficacy, hope, optimism, and resilience.
