This study empirically examines the effects of multidimensional CEO characteristics on corporate social responsibility(CSR) performance in Chinese firms and investigates how these relationships are conditionally shaped by institutional and industrial contexts, specifically environmental regulatory pressure and industrial pollution levels. Drawing on an integrated theoretical framework comprising Upper Echelons Theory, Institutional Theory, Signaling Theory, Agency Theory, and Stakeholder Theory, the study identifies CEO power, publicness, and sustainability orientation as core explanatory variables, with environmental regulatory pressure and industrial pollution level as moderating variables. The analysis employs an unbalanced panel dataset of 1,023 Chinese A-share listed firms over the period 2015–2022, utilizing panel fixed-effects regression controlling for firm and year fixed effects. Significance levels were set at three thresholds: p < .10, p < .05, and p < .01.
The empirical results are as follows. In the main effects analysis, CEO power exerted a significant negative effect on CSR performance(H1-1 supported), while CEO publicness significantly enhanced CSR performance(H1-2 supported). CEO sustainability orientation also showed a significant positive effect on CSR performance, supporting H1-3.
In the moderation analysis, higher environmental regulatory pressure was found to attenuate the negative effect of CEO power on CSR performance(H2-1 supported). However, the positive effect of CEO publicness was found to weaken as regulatory pressure intensified(H2-2 rejected), and the interaction between CEO sustainability orientation and environmental regulatory pressure was not statistically significant(H2-3 rejected). These findings suggest that as CSR activities shift from voluntary strategy to institutional compliance, the capacity of individual CEO values to generate additional performance differentiation becomes increasingly constrained. With respect to industrial pollution level, the interactions between all three CEO characteristics and industrial pollution level were statistically non-significant, leading to the rejection of H3-1, H3-2, and H3-3. This indicates that firm-level regulatory pressure experienced directly by individual firms plays a more decisive role in conditioning the effects of CEO characteristics than macro-level industrial structural factors.
These findings suggest that CSR performance cannot be adequately explained by the linear effects of CEO individual characteristics alone, but is rather conditionally shaped through interactions with the institutional regulatory environment. This study contributes to the literature by extending the application of Upper Echelons Theory to the domain of non-financial performance, and by integrating Institutional Theory, Signaling Theory, Stakeholder Theory, and Agency Theory to reconceptualize the formation mechanisms of CSR performance from a multilevel and conditional perspective.
