Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have been reported to experience difficulties in emotion regulation, understanding others' emotions, and comprehending the meanings of emotion-related vocabulary. Although previous studies have mainly focused on facial emotion recognition and emotional understanding in social situations, relatively few have examined emotion vocabulary comprehension, particularly across different cue presentation modalities. This study aimed to compare emotion vocabulary comprehension between children with ADHD and typically developing (TD) children and to investigate their performance according to three cue presentation modalities: reading, listening, and picture cues.
Participants included 15 children with ADHD and 15 typically developing children in Grades 1 to 3. After confirming nonverbal intelligence and language abilities, participants completed an emotion vocabulary comprehension task consisting of reading, listening, and picture cue conditions. The data were analyzed using independent-samples t-tests and two-way mixed analysis of variance (ANOVA).
The results showed that children with ADHD demonstrated significantly lower emotion vocabulary comprehension than their TD peers. A significant main effect of group was found, whereas neither the main effect of cue presentation modality nor the interaction between group and cue presentation modality was significant. These findings suggest that children with ADHD showed lower performance across reading, listening, and picture cue conditions rather than difficulties associated with a specific cue presentation modality. Although an additional comparison revealed a significant group difference in the reading condition, the absence of a significant interaction indicates that this finding should be interpreted with caution.
This study extends previous research on emotion understanding by examining emotion vocabulary comprehension across different cue presentation modalities. The findings provide preliminary evidence for understanding the characteristics of emotion vocabulary comprehension in children with ADHD and may serve as a basis for developing language assessment and intervention programs related to emotion understanding.
