This study aimed to investigate the effect of attachment anxiety on social media addiction among university students and to verify the sequential mediating effects of loneliness and conformity motive in this process. Through this, the study sought to expand the understanding of the psychological mechanisms explaining social media addiction among university students and to integratively identify the pathway through which emotional and motivational factors related to attachment anxiety lead to social media addiction. To this end, an online survey was conducted with 203 university students aged 18 to 24 from across the country. The measures used in this study were the Korean version of the Experience in Close Relationships-Revised, the Korean version of the UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3, the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale, and the conformity motive subscale of the revised Social Media Use Motives Scale. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics and the PROCESS macro. The results showed that attachment anxiety was positively associated with social media addiction, and that attachment anxiety also had significant effects on loneliness and conformity motive. In addition, conformity motive was found to significantly mediate the relationship between attachment anxiety and social media addiction, and the sequential mediating effect of loneliness and conformity motive was also found to be significant. In contrast, the simple mediating effect of loneliness alone was not significant.
These findings suggest that loneliness and conformity motive function as important psychological mechanisms in the process through which attachment anxiety leads to social media addiction among university students. In particular, this study is meaningful in that it shows the possibility that loneliness may lead to addictive use through conformity motive rather than directly increasing social media addiction. This study is also meaningful in that it expands the understanding of social media addiction among university students and provides basic data for prevention and intervention.
