This study aims to explore the potential of media expansion through the extension of technical support from painting to painting animation in the process of reconstructing personal memory into cultural memory through pictorial visualization. Grounded in Rosalind Krauss‘s proposition that “the medium is memory,” this research examines how memories derived from experiences of illness can be pictorially visualized and shared with viewers through both the traditional technical supports of oil painting on canvas and drawing, as well as the reinvented technical support called‘oil on acrylic panel animation’
The research is conducted through a step-by-step production process consisting of oil painting on canvas, drawing, and animation. First, personal experiences and perceptions are recorded through oil painting on canvas. Drawings are then employed to design the temporal structure of images. Subsequently, pictorial visualization and time-based imagery are integrated through oil on acrylic panel animation. In this process, the materiality of oil paint and the temporality of animation are combined within a single visual field, creating a structure in which the generation and transformation of memory become visually perceptible.
The analysis focuses on the production processes of two works Brain to Meninges and About the Little Things. The former visualizes hallucinatory memories derived from experiences of illness through a nonlinear flow of images, while the latter visualizes memories based on changes in everyday perception and sensation following recovery. Although both works employ the same production method, they reveal different modes of visualization according to the nature of the memories represented, demonstrating that artistic expression constitutes a mutable structure shaped by bodily conditions and lived experiences.
The findings indicate that the process extending from flat painting to painting animation functions as a methodology for expanding pictorial visualization, enabling the continuous reconstruction of material traces of images within temporal flow. Through this process, personal memory is sensorially reconstructed and holds the potential to expand into cultural memory shared by viewers.
Furthermore, this study demonstrates that the production process of painting animation can be expanded across multiple media forms, including flat painting, moving images, and performative modes of production. Such media expansion spatially reconfigures the relationship between still and moving images, making possible an artistic form that organizes the viewer’s perceptual experience in a multilayered manner.
