The purpose of this study was to develop a moderately familiar story retelling task with an appropriate level of difficulty for the systematic assessment of discourse abilities in Korean adults aged 60 years and older, to examine differences in discourse performance according to task familiarity and discourse analysis measures, and to investigate the relationship between task performance and overall cognitive functioning.
A total of 26 cognitively healthy Korean adults aged 60 to 76 years (15 aged 60-64 years and 11 aged 65 years or older) residing in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions participated in this study. Three story retelling tasks differing in familiarity were employed: a familiar story (Heungbu and Nolbu), a moderately familiar story (The Magic Millstone), and a novel story (The Well Story). Discourse performance was analyzed using the number of Information Units (IUs), IU ratio, and Correct Information Unit (CIU) ratio. Statistical analyses included two-way mixed analysis of variance (ANOVA), repeated-measures ANOVA, and Pearson product-moment correlation analyses.
The results were as follows. First, significant effects of task familiarity were found for both the number of IU and IU ratio (p〈.001), with performance showing a linear decline from the familiar story to the moderately familiar story and then to the novel story. In addition, a significant main effect of age group was observed, indicating that participants aged 60-64 years generally outperformed those aged 65 years or older (F(1,24)=4.345, p〈.05). These findings indicate that story retelling performance in adults aged 60 years and older may vary according to task familiarity.
Second, when comparing the sensitivity of discourse measures, the IU ratio decreased substantially as task familiarity declined, whereas the CIU ratio remained relatively stable. A significant interaction effect was found between task familiarity and discourse measure type (F(2,50)=35.40, p〈.001, η²=.586). Furthermore, the gap between the IU ratio and CIU ratio increased as task familiarity decreased. These findings indicate that IU analysis is more sensitive than CIU analysis in detecting performance differences associated with variations in task familiarity.
Third, analysis of the relationship between IU ratio and K-MMSE scores revealed significant positive correlations across all task types (r=.533–.700), with the strongest correlation observed for the moderately familiar story task. These findings indicate that the IU ratio is a discourse measure closely related to cognitive functioning.
In conclusion, the findings demonstrated that story familiarity is an important task variable affecting story retelling performance in adults aged 60 years and older. Furthermore, the findings supported the potential utility of the moderately familiar story retelling task developed in this study. In addition, IU analysis was found to be more sensitive than CIU analysis in detecting performance differences associated with task familiarity and to be significantly associated with overall cognitive functioning. These findings suggest that IU analysis may serve as a useful discourse analysis measure for the assessment of discourse in adults aged 60 years and older. The findings are expected to provide foundational data for discourse assessment in individuals with mild cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative disorders.
