This study aimed to investigate the effects of self-feedback and indirect feedback on speech correction and re-error rates in school-aged children with auditory processing difficulties, using a non-logical sentence repetition task. We sought to identify efficient language information processing pathways and strategies for speech correction intervention. A total of 14 children (10 boys, 4 girls; mean age: 12.3 years) who met the screening criteria for both the Korean-Token Test For Children-2 (K-TTFC-2) and the Language Scale for School-aged Children (LSSC) participated in this study. Participants performed a non-logical sentence repetition task consisting of 10 sentences (6-word clusters each), constructed from high-frequency vocabulary based on elementary school textbooks, with 5 sentences randomly assigned to each feedback condition. The results showed that, first, during the initial speech production, the children exhibited high error rates due to the absence of contextual cues, particularly in particles (28.6%), verbs (24.0%), and the latter parts of the sentences—specifically the 4th (28.5%) and 5th (29.7%) word clusters—reflecting the cognitive load within the phonological loop. Second, while total error frequency decreased following feedback, 50% of the participants expressed a preference for self-feedback, and 57.1% reported identifying more errors during self-feedback, confirming that self-voice serves as a meaningful mechanism for metacognitive activation and enhanced correction motivation through objective, third-party perspective monitoring. Third, paired t-tests revealed that the speech correction rate was significantly higher in the self-feedback condition (M=64.3) compared to the indirect feedback condition (M=35.6%) (t(13) = -4.06, p = .001), while the re-error rate was significantly lower in the self-feedback condition (M=2.32%) compared to the indirect feedback condition (M=11.67%) (t(13) = -3.24, p = .006). In conclusion, while external indirect feedback shows limitations in revising internal language models for children with auditory processing difficulties, self-feedback strategies that involve direct monitoring of one’s own speech effectively control cognitive load—particularly in sentence-final structures and core parts of speech (particles and verbs)—and serve as an efficient clinical intervention strategy to maximize speech correction capabilities.
