This study aims to explore the learning experiences and subsequent changes among elderly participants engaged in a paper craft lifelong education program. The participants, who joined the program primarily due to health issues or difficulties in family caregiving, were interviewed to examine how their involvement in learning activities influenced their lives. The findings reveal that participation in the program fostered positive experiences through diverse learning activities, instructor guidance, and peer interaction, which enhanced problem-solving skills, self-efficacy, and self-esteem.
The program contributed to multidimensional changes: cognitively, participants acquired folding techniques that stimulated brain activity and supported memory retention; functionally, repeated practice improved hand dexterity and tool use; emotionally, the transformation of a single sheet of paper into various works provided joy and vitality; socially, participants developed a sense of belonging and supportive networks, with instructors serving not only as knowledge providers but also as emotional and social supporters. Furthermore, program participation enabled elderly learners to rediscover a sense of purpose in later life, offering meaningful engagement beyond economic productivity. Importantly, the activities also promoted health enhancementby stimulating both cognitive and physical functions.
In conclusion, the paper craft lifelong education program serves as a valuable educational resource that improves the quality of life for the elderly by reinforcing self-worth, fostering social integration, supporting health maintenance, and providing renewed purpose and meaning in later life. This study suggests the need for program expansion, tailored curriculum design, strengthened social support, integration with health promotion initiatives, and policy-level support to ensure sustainable implementation.
