The purpose of this study is to analyze how the visual elements appearing in the cup package design of Chinese takeout coffee brands affect consumers’ cognitive psychology and purchase intention. As coffee consumption has become increasingly routine and takeout consumption has expanded, the cup package of coffee brands has moved beyond the role of a simple beverage container and now functions as an important visual communication medium that conveys brand identity and influences consumers’ cognitive responses and purchase decision-making.
To achieve this purpose, this study first selected representative takeout coffee brands from China and Korea and comparatively analyzed the visual expression characteristics of their cup package designs. The Chinese brands selected for analysis were Luckin Coffee, Cotti Coffee, Manner Coffee, and M Stand, while the Korean brands were Mega MGC Coffee, Compose Coffee, Ediya Coffee, and Paikdabang. In the case analysis, brand logotype, image, color, typography, and layout were established as the main visual elements. Subsequently, a questionnaire survey was conducted among consumers with experience in consuming Chinese takeout coffee. The collected data were verified using SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 26.0 through exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, correlation analysis, and structural equation modeling.
The results of the case analysis showed that Chinese takeout coffee brands tended to emphasize brand individuality and differentiated visual images. Luckin Coffee formed strong brand recognition through its blue color and deer symbol, while Cotti Coffee emphasized a youthful and dynamic brand image through red color and energetic visual expression. Manner Coffee and M Stand expressed specialty coffee and lifestyle-oriented images through restrained colors, concise typography, and minimalist layouts. In contrast, Korean brands tended to emphasize popularity, price friendliness, clear brand recognition, and repeated purchase experience. This indicates that Chinese brands focus on strengthening brand differentiation and memorability in a growing market environment, whereas Korean brands focus on establishing a visual system that consumers can easily recognize and repeatedly choose within a highly competitive market environment.
The empirical analysis revealed that among the visual elements of package design, brand logotype, image, and color had a significant positive effect on consumers’ synesthetic associations. In addition, brand logotype, image, color, typography, and layout all had significant positive effects on attention, while brand logotype, image, color, and typography were found to have significant effects on memorability. With regard to purchase intention, brand logotype, image, and color had significant positive effects. Among the factors of consumer cognitive psychology, attention and memorability had significant positive effects on purchase intention. In contrast, synesthetic association did not have a direct significant effect on purchase intention.
These results suggest that, in order to enhance consumers’ purchase intention through the cup package design of takeout coffee brands, it is not sufficient merely to convey a sensory atmosphere. Rather, a clear design strategy is required so that consumers can quickly recognize and visually remember the brand. In particular, brand logotype, color, and image function as key elements that enhance consumers’ attention and memorability, which may further influence the formation of purchase intention. Therefore, Chinese takeout coffee brands need to establish consumer-oriented package design strategies centered on highly recognizable logotypes, consistent color systems, clear image expression, and layouts that facilitate information delivery in order to strengthen their competitiveness in the market.
This study is significant in that it compares the cup package designs of representative Chinese and Korean takeout coffee brands and empirically examines the influence relationships among package design visual elements, consumer cognitive psychology, and purchase intention, with a focus on Chinese consumers. In addition, by interpreting takeout coffee cup packages not merely as product packaging or decorative expression but as visual communication media that connect consumers’ brand recognition and purchase decision-making, this study may provide basic data for future research on coffee brand package design and the establishment of practical design strategies.
