The purpose of this study is to analyze the formative characteristics of Vincent van Gogh, Claud Monet, and Paul Cézanne's still-life paintings representing Impressionism and Post-Impressionism in the late 19th century, and to apply them to contemporary hair art design to explore artistic formative beauty and creative expression. Modern hair art is expanding beyond the realm of simple beauty to the field of visual art that values artistic sensibility and original formability, and a new design approach is required through convergence with painting art. Therefore, this study attempted to expand the expression area of artistic hair design by reinterpreting the color, shape, texture, sense of space, and composition principles in Western still-life paintings as formative elements of hair art.
The research method was conducted focusing on literature research and case analysis, and the formative characteristics were analyzed by selecting representative still-life paintings of Gogh, Monet, and Cezanne. After that, the artistic expression characteristics of each artist were connected to visual elements such as form, texture, color, balance, and rhythm, which are hair art design elements, and applied to the production of the work. In addition, in the process of converting a pictorial image into a hair formation, three-dimensional and artistic expression was attempted through the use of hair volume, waves, color coloring, and objects.
In Gogh's still-life painting, the analysis was focused on the dynamic sense of rhythm that appears in the contrast of intense primary colors and free brush touches. This was applied to hair art to visualize emotional energy and vitality through bold color colors, organic wave expression, and rough texture production. In particular, a dynamic and expressive hair-shaped beauty was realized by using the flow of lines and repetitive movements.
In Monet's still-life painting, the analysis was focused on subtle changes in light and color, overlapping of soft shades, and nature-friendly atmosphere. Based on this, a soft and feminine image was created by applying the hair color gradient technique and transparent color expression. In addition, it tried to reproduce the emotional atmosphere unique to Impressionism with hair art by expressing flexible textures in consideration of color changes according to natural light.
In Cézanne's still-life painting, the structural form of objects, stable composition, and geometric space composition were mainly analyzed. This was applied to hair art design to express structural styling and three-dimensional silhouettes using the harmony of faces and lines. Through repetitive shape composition and balanced volume arrangement, a stable and formative hair work was produced, and the modern and artistic formative beauty was emphasized.
As a result of the study, it was confirmed that the formative elements that appeared in the still-life paintings of the three artists can be used as an effective visual language for creative expression of hair art design. The color, texture, and morphological characteristics of painting art played an important role in enhancing the formative completeness of hair art, conveying an emotional message, and contributing to expanding the possibility of convergence between art and beauty. In particular, it was suggested that hair art based on pictorial formability forms an artistic value differentiated from existing beauty design and can be used as a new creative methodology in the field of modern hair design.
Therefore, this study proposes the possibility of convergence between painting art and hair design by incorporating the formability of Western still-life paintings into contemporary hair art, and is meaningful in expanding the artistic expression area of hair art. It is also expected to be used as basic data for hair art research using various art trends and visual art genres in the future.
