The purpose of this study was to compare word discrimination responses to misaligned auditory stimuli in general children aged 4-6 and children with speech impairment, and to examine the response characteristics according to typical and atypical phonological error patterns. The subjects of this study were 16 general children and 15 children with speech impairment, and word discrimination tasks using misaligned stimulus words including typical and atypical phonological error patterns were conducted. The collected data were analyzed through independent sample t-test, mixed variance analysis, and Pearson correlation analysis.
The results of the study are as follows. First, the general child group showed significantly higher performance in the total score of word discrimination tasks than the group of children with speech impairment. In addition, both groups showed higher recognition rates in the peony stimulus word than the five-tone stimulus word, and in particular, children with speech impairment showed significantly lower performance in the recognition rate of the five-tone stimulus word. Second, as a result of analyzing the response pattern to the five-tone stimulus word, the general children showed the highest percentage of correct response, while children with speech impairment showed the highest percentage of choosing similar words including atypical error patterns. In addition, the difference according to the response type and the effect of interaction between the groups were significant. Third, as a result of analyzing the error types of all children, the responses were found in the order of similar words including atypical error patterns, similar words including typical error patterns, and non-related words, and the difference in error types between groups was not significant. Fourth, consonant accuracy showed a significant positive correlation with the miso-pitched recognition rate and the peony recognition rate, and in particular, the correlation with the miso-pitched recognition rate was higher.
These results suggest that the difficulty of children with speech sound disorders is not a simple problem of speech sound calculation, but can also be related to speech sound recognition and phonological processing. In addition, this study is significant in that it identifies the speech processing characteristics of children with speech sound disorders using the misalignment interpretation task and provides basic data on the phonological representation and speech processing characteristics.
