This study aimed to examine early childhood teachers' perceptions of speech sound development, their experiences with early identification of speech sound disorders, and the current status of referral to speech-language therapy, with the goal of exploring practical early intervention strategies applicable to early childhood education settings.
Early childhood is a period of rapid language development, and speech sound development during this time directly affects communication clarity in interactions with peers and adults. Given that unaddressed speech sound difficulties can lead to negative outcomes in peer relationship formation and subsequent academic learning, the practical significance of early identification and timely referral to therapy in educational settings cannot be overlooked. To this end, an online survey was administered to 62 early childhood teachers working in kindergartens and daycare centers. The survey examined their awareness of speech sound development and disorders, conceptual knowledge, perceptions and attitudes, experiences observing children with speech sound difficulties, referral practices, and professional training needs.
The results indicated that teachers' overall awareness of speech-language therapy and speech sound therapy remained at a foundational level. While understanding of basic concepts and age-related developmental criteria was relatively adequate, responses tended to be inconsistent on items involving the distinction between developmental errors and disorders, as well as on items with higher potential for conceptual confusion. When comparing speech sound awareness scores by years of teaching experience, teachers with one to four years of experience scored slightly higher on average than those with five or more years, though the difference was not statistically significant. This suggests that systematic education may contribute more directly to the development of professional competence than the accumulation of field experience alone. Although teachers' recognition of the importance of early identification and their own role in the process was generally positive, only 37.1% reported actual experience referring children to speech-language therapy. Key barriers in the referral process included insufficient parental understanding or outright refusal, lack of information about available therapy services, and accessibility issues. While 74.2% of respondents reported no prior participation in training related to speech sound disorders or speech-language therapy, willingness to participate in future training was comparatively high, with a notable demand for practice-oriented, field-applicable educational content.
Based on these findings, this study recommends strengthening professional training programs for early childhood teachers in the area of speech sound development, along with the establishment of a sustained collaborative framework between early childhood education institutions and speech-language therapy services.
