This study is a case study that examined the application process and changes of a fairy tale-based group play therapy program designed to enhance self-expression among children attending a community child center. The participants were 12 school-aged children using a community child center, consisting of an experimental group of 6 children who participated in the program and a control group of 6 children. The program was conducted for a total of 10 sessions, twice a week, with each session lasting 60 minutes.
The program was structured to help children explore the emotions and situations of characters in fairy tales and express their own experiences and thoughts through play activities. Changes in self-expression were analyzed using the Self-Expression Rating Scale developed by Rakos and Schroeder and adapted and modified by Byeon Chang-jin and Kim Seong-hoe, along with session-by-session observational records. The results showed a statistically significant improvement in the overall self-expression scores of the experimental group. In addition, observational analyses of each session indicated that children’s expression of thoughts and emotions increased throughout the program, and their methods of self-expression expanded through interactions with peers. These findings suggest that a fairy tale-based group play therapy program has potential as an intervention approach for enhancing self-expression among children attending community child centers.
