Contemporary city branding functions not merely as a means of urban identification, but as an integrated visual communication system that conveys regional identity, cultural value, and urban image. As globalization and intercity competition continue to intensify, city brands have become important strategic assets in tourism, culture, economy, and international exchange, contributing directly to urban competitiveness. However, many city brands still lack a systematic reflection of regional culture and historical context in the process of visual symbol construction. In particular, in minority ethnic regions, indigenous cultural resources are often reduced to decorative visual elements rather than being incorporated into a coherent brand identity system.
Zhangjiajie, China, is a representative tourist city internationally recognized for the quartz sandstone peak forest landscape of the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. At the same time, it is a multicultural region inhabited by various ethnic minority groups, including the Tujia, Miao, and Bai peoples. Nevertheless, the current city brand of Zhangjiajie remains heavily centered on natural landscape imagery and fails to comprehensively reflect regional culture and ethnic identity. This has resulted in an imbalance between domestic cultural perceptions and international nature-oriented recognition. Therefore, this study aims to propose a direction for the development of city brand renewal design based on the analysis of minority regional characteristics in Zhangjiajie and to systematically examine the relationship between the visual translation of regional cultural resources and the cognitive structure of city branding.
The study employed a combination of literature review, case analysis, field-oriented cultural research, and empirical analysis. First, theoretical discussions related to city branding, regional identity, visual translation, and minority regional culture were reviewed. Subsequently, the regional characteristics of Zhangjiajie were analyzed through its natural landscape, traditional architecture, ethnic patterns, behavioral culture, and color systems. In addition, comparative analyses of city brand cases from Chinese minority ethnic regions were conducted to identify the characteristics of cultural structures and visual expression methods. Based on these findings, a strategic direction for the renewal design of Zhangjiajie’s city brand was established, and three logo design proposals—symbolic, typographic, and abstract—were developed.
For the empirical study, questionnaire surveys and expert evaluations were conducted to verify the visual recognizability, regional symbolism, cultural communicability, and brand competitiveness of the proposed designs. The results indicated that the symbolic logo proposal, which integrated natural landscape elements with ethnic cultural symbols through a concentrated core visual system, received the highest overall evaluation. In particular, it demonstrated relatively strong effectiveness in international recognition and the communication of regional cultural identity. Furthermore, the study confirmed that minority cultural elements can enhance the cultural identity and sustainability of city branding when transformed into a systematic visual structure rather than being used merely as decorative motifs.
This study is significant in that it systematically presents the possibility of visually translating minority regional cultural resources into city brand renewal design. Through the case of Zhangjiajie, it also suggests the potential for expanding a nature-oriented city brand into a culturally integrated branding structure. The findings are expected to provide both theoretical and practical references for future research and development of city brand design in minority ethnic regions of China.
