This study aims to systematize the philosophy of Rev. Rhee Young-sik (pen name Seongsan), known as "Ingwangism," from a social welfare perspective. It traces the life trajectory of Rev. Rhee, who rose resolutely from the dark shackles of the Japanese colonial period and the Korean War—which stemmed from ideological conflicts following liberation—declared that"Humans are light," and dedicating himself to restoring the dignity of marginalized leprosy patients and people with disabilities.
This research was initiated at a time when modern social welfare faces limitations; as it becomes more organized, specialized, and maintains a bureaucratic attitude, it objectifies and alienates human beings who possess unique narratives. Rev. Lee’s philosophy, which penetrates the essential value of human existence, is seen as offering valuable insights for re-establishing the philosophical foundations of welfare practice and restoring spirituality.
Adopting a biographical research methodology, this study attempted an in-depth literature analysis centered on primary sources, including Rev. Rhee’s autobiographical works, *The Way of Love, The Way of Hope* and *Love, Light, Freedom*. Through this, his life was divided into periods of "faith-based practice," "theological practice," and "ideological practice" to identify the life and practice of a social welfare practitioner, and the role of the social worker was clarified from the perspective of modern social welfare. In terms of ideology, the study examined the process by which the Western Christian theological concept of "Image of God (Imago Dei)" and the Korean traditional philosophy of "Reverence for Heaven and Love for Humanity" were creatively fused within his life to manifest as a unique practical philosophy known as "Ingwang-ism."
The main findings of this study can be summarized as follows. First, through Ingwang-ism, Rev. Rhee Young-sik enabled the viewing of human beings as dignified beings harboring "light" possessing infinite potential within. This aligns with the perspective in modern social welfare that views clients not merely as objects to be solved for "problems," but as autonomous individuals with the potential to resolve their own issues. In this regard, Ingwang-ism can be evaluated as a pioneering practice of the strengths perspective and empowerment found in modern social welfare.
Second, the three principles of ‘Love, Light, and Freedom,’ which serve as the creative driving force of Ihnkwangism, operate in a mutually complementary manner. Love is an inclusive foundation that embraces all life, while Light possesses a creative nature that penetrates darkness; thus, these two can be viewed as essential pillars supporting life. Freedom appears as a mechanism that enables love and light to meet naturally without conflict, serving as a catalyst for achieving personal perfection through the practice of life as a voluntary choice rather than a mechanical obligation. In modern social welfare, these three self-creative principles of Love, Light, and Freedom can function as a holistic practice mechanism that leads to ontological restoration, transcending professional values such as partnership and self-determination.
Third, Rev. Rhee Young-sik’s social welfare practice embodied the values of Christ’s love through his care for leprosy patients at Aerakwon and his relational ministry during the Japanese colonial period. The establishment of the Daegu School for the Blind and Deaf after liberation, initiated as part of the nation-building efforts, realized the practical principles of education and rehabilitation for the disabled through the discovery of the ‘Light’ within human beings. Furthermore, through the Tinian remains repatriation project, he has demonstrated that human dignity can be expanded into historical healing by restoring damaged human existence even after death—transcending the realms of human existence such as caring for leprosy patients and educating the disabled—thereby resonating deeply within the field of social welfare today.
In conclusion, Rev. Rhee Young-sik’s social welfare practice, based on Inkwang-ism, appears to provide a basis for a thorough sense of calling and ethical rearmament for modern professional social workers living practical lives grounded in Korean identity and spirituality. This study holds significant academic and practical importance in that it expands the scope of the history of indigenous Korean social welfare thought and proposes a new paradigm of "spirituality-based social welfare" to overcome the crisis of dehumanization and human alienation in the era of digital transformation, which is rapidly developing based on AI.
