Real-life communication environments are often accompanied by background noise, which provides listeners with incomplete bottom-up information. In order to process speech successfully in such environments, successful lexical access must occur, and the importance of clear phonological representations is therefore emphasized. As children grow, their phonological representations become more stable and refined. However, children with speech sound disorders may show deficits from the early stages of phonological representation development, and various difficulties related to language processing have been reported. Moreover, despite having no overall language impairment, they may experience difficulties in successful lexical access due to the influence of lexical factors.
Therefore, the present study aimed to examine patterns of lexical access and retrieval in 21 children with pure speech sound disorders and 24 typically developing children by developing a lexical access task in which lexical factors were manipulated. Through this task, the study sought to compare the quality of phonological representations and processing abilities between the two groups. The task consisted of two-syllable word sets divided into four conditions according to two lexical factors: word frequency and mean neighborhood frequency, each categorized as high or low. A coughing sound was inserted into the final syllable of each word. Participants listened to the auditory stimuli and were asked to identify the word they heard. After the task, accuracy, error types and error rates, and response times, including first-syllable onset time and final-syllable onset time, were analyzed for each word set.
The results showed that, in the analysis of accuracy, both groups demonstrated higher accuracy as word frequency and mean neighborhood frequency increased, with this effect being more pronounced in the typically developing group. In the analysis of error rates by error type, both groups showed higher rates of final-syllable errors than first-syllable errors, whole-word errors, and lexicalization errors. Specifically, in the pure speech sound disorder group, first-syllable errors occurred significantly more often in the high mean neighborhood frequency condition, whereas whole-word errors occurred significantly more often in the low mean neighborhood frequency condition. In the typically developing group, lexicalization errors occurred significantly more often in the high mean neighborhood frequency condition, whereas final-syllable errors occurred significantly more often in the low mean neighborhood frequency condition. In the analysis of first-syllable onset time, differences were observed in mean response times, but these differences were not statistically significant. In contrast, differences were found in final-syllable onset time. Across both groups, higher word frequency was associated with faster final-syllable onset time, whereas higher mean neighborhood frequency was associated with slower final-syllable onset time, indicating opposing effects of the two lexical factors. Finally, correlation analyses among raw scores for receptive and expressive language, revised percentage of consonants correct, and accuracy on the lexical access task revealed significant positive correlations with receptive language raw scores in three conditions, and significant positive correlations with expressive language raw scores and revised percentage of consonants correct in all conditions.
Taken together, these findings suggest that word frequency and mean neighborhood frequency operate through different mechanisms in lexical access and retrieval. Word frequency appears to be related to the activation level of the target word within the phonological space, whereas mean neighborhood frequency appears to be related to the activation level of the phonological space in which the target word is located. Typically developing children, based on stable phonological representations, are able to efficiently use the effects of word frequency and mean neighborhood frequency to access the phonological space, inhibit neighboring competing words, and successfully access the target word. In contrast, children with pure speech sound disorders may successfully access the phonological space but, due to unstable phonological representations, may fail to overcome competition between neighboring words and the target word, resulting in relatively more frequent failures in lexical access. Therefore, the findings of this study are expected to provide a theoretical basis for more closely examining the quality of phonological representations and processing abilities in children with speech sound disorders, as well as for selecting appropriate intervention strategies and target vocabulary.
