The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a phonological representation formation intervention and a passive imitation intervention on word production and phonological processing performance in children with speech sound disorders, and to examine the patterns of change observed in each intervention approach. The participants were six children with speech sound disorders aged between 5 and 6 years. A single-subject, within-participant comparative design was employed. Each participant received both intervention conditions within the same session, and the interventions were conducted over a total of eight sessions. Each session consisted of spontaneous production assessment, phonological judgment tasks, phonological representation formation intervention, and passive imitation intervention. A maintenance assessment was conducted two weeks after the completion of the intervention. The dependent variables were spontaneous production accuracy and judgment task accuracy. Based on the performance results of these two tasks, characteristics related to the access and retrieval of phonological representations were indirectly examined.
The results showed that, in the phonological representation formation intervention, all children demonstrated relatively rapid and stable improvements in both judgment tasks and spontaneous production. In the judgment tasks, performance started at a low level and increased sharply as the sessions progressed, with most children reaching high levels of accuracy during the later sessions. In addition, improvements were observed across various types of phonological modification, including onset, nucleus, and coda changes as well as phoneme substitutions. In spontaneous production, children initially showed either no response or low accuracy; however, production emerged after a certain point during intervention and was subsequently maintained relatively consistently.
In contrast, the passive imitation intervention showed gradual improvements in both judgment tasks and spontaneous production, but the rate of improvement was relatively slower and individual differences among participants were observed. Some children demonstrated limited improvement in specific types of phonological modifications, and in spontaneous production, the onset of production was delayed or stable performance was not consistently observed for some words.
Differences between the two intervention approaches continued during the maintenance phase. Overall, high levels of performance were maintained in the phonological representation formation intervention, whereas fluctuations or decreases in performance were observed in some children who received the passive imitation intervention.
These findings suggest that phonological representation formation intervention may effectively support improvements in performance by facilitating the storage, activation, and connection of phonological information to speech production. Furthermore, the results indicate that intervention approaches considering phonological representation-related processing may play an important role in improving word production in children with speech sound disorders. Therefore, in clinical practice, it is necessary to design intervention approaches that consider not only repetitive imitation-based methods but also the formation and processing of phonological representations.
