This study aimed to investigate the differences in articulatory planning, execution, and transition times, as well as phoneme accuracy, between children with speech sound disorders (SSD) and typically developing (TD) children based on word types (high-frequency words, low-frequency words, and nonwords). Through this, the study sought to examine the underlying deficits in speech-motor programming and planning abilities in children with SSD.
The participants included 36 children aged 4 to 5 years: 15 children with pure SSD and 21 TD children. A repetition task consisting of high-frequency words, low-frequency words, and nonwords was administered as the experimental task. Using the Praat software, acoustic data were analyzed to measure articulatory planning, execution, and transition times, and phoneme accuracy was calculated based on the produced phonemes. Data were analyzed using a two-way mixed ANOVA with group and word type as independent variables.
The results were as follows. First, regardless of the group, articulatory planning time was significantly shorter for high-frequency words than for nonwords (F=3.521, p〈.05). Second, for articulatory execution time, there was no significant main effect of group (F=2.682, p〉.05), nor was there a significant main effect of word type (F=1.062, p〉.05). Third, for articulatory transition time, the within-subject main effect of word type was statistically significant (F=3.469, p〈.05), with significantly shorter transition times observed in high-frequency words compared to both low-frequency words and nonwords. Lastly, for phoneme accuracy, the between-subject main effect of group was statistically significant (F=32.654, p〈.001), the within-subject main effect of word type was significant (F=24.626, p〈.001), and a significant interaction between word type and group was observed (F=7.456, p〈.01).
These findings suggest that while children with SSD experience cognitive load associated with word frequency in a pattern similar to that of TD children, they encounter greater difficulties in securing articulatory accuracy due to underlying vulnerabilities in speech-motor programming and execution. This deficit was particularly pronounced in tasks requiring the retrieval of infrequently executed motor programs or the real-time formation of novel motor programs, such as low-frequency words and nonwords. This study is significant in that it analyzed the speech-motor program and programming abilities of children with SSD using articulatory timing measures and elucidated their underlying deficits according to familiarity based on frequency of use and lexicality.
