The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among university students’ positive self-perception, life satisfaction, and perceived social support, and to investigate whether perceived social support mediates the relationship between positive self-perception and life satisfaction. In addition, this study examined the parallel multiple mediating effects of significant-other support, family support, and friend support, which are subdimensions of perceived social support. To this end, university students’ positive self-perception was specified as the independent variable, life satisfaction as the dependent variable, and perceived social support and its subdimensions as mediating variables. The general characteristics of the participants included gender, grade, major, and family socioeconomic status.
This study collected data through a survey of 241 four-year university students in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, and the collected data were analyzed using SPSS. In addition, PROCESS Macro Model 4 was used to examine the mediating effects based on Hayes’ (2022) analytical procedure. Specifically, the single mediating effect was examined by entering perceived social support as a mediating variable, and the parallel multiple mediating effect was examined by simultaneously entering significant-other support, family support, and friend support, which are subdimensions of perceived social support.
The results of this study are as follows. First, the analysis of correlations among the major variables showed that university students’ positive self-perception, perceived social support, and life satisfaction were all significantly and positively related. Second, the indirect effect of perceived social support in the relationship between university students’ positive self-perception and life satisfaction was statistically significant. Third, among the subdimensions of perceived social support, the indirect effects of significant-other support and family support were statistically significant in the relationship between university students’ positive self-perception and life satisfaction. On the other hand, the indirect effect of friend support was not statistically significant.
The implications of this study are as follows. First, this study is meaningful in that it suggested that university students’ positive self-perception is positively associated with life satisfaction and may function as an important internal resource related to life satisfaction. Second, this study is meaningful in that it showed that perceived social support mediates the relationship between positive self-perception and life satisfaction. Third, this study is significant in that it examined the parallel multiple mediating effects of significant-other support, family support, and friend support, which are subdimensions of perceived social support. These findings suggest that the types and roles of support resources perceived by university students may be linked to life satisfaction in different ways. Fourth, this study is significant in that it provides practical implications for improving the life satisfaction of university students.
