This study was to examine speech-language pathologists’ perceptions of language therapy and assessment for multicultural children, their perceptions and experiences regarding termination decisions, the importance of factors considered in termination decisions, and differences according to the characteristics of speech-language pathologists.
A survey was conducted with 50 speech-language pathologists who had experience providing speech-language therapy to multicultural children. The questionnaire consisted of 70 items covering general information, general perceptions of language therapy and assessment for multicultural children, perceptions of therapy termination, termination-related factors, actual termination experiences, institutional and support needs, and parent-related perceptions. The collected data were analyzed using frequency and percentage, mean and standard deviation, ranking of importance, and total and mean scores by domain. In addition, t-tests and ANOVA were conducted to examine differences according to the characteristics of speech-language pathologists. Correlation analysis and exploratory multiple regression analysis were also conducted to examine relationships among major perception variables and factors related to termination decision perceptions.
The results of this study were as follows. First, speech-language pathologists highly recognized the importance of social communication and adaptation, parent counseling and family linkage, and background factors in language therapy and assessment for multicultural children. However, their perception of the appropriateness of currently used language assessment tools was relatively low. Second, speech-language pathologists considered follow-up monitoring, consultation with parents and institutions, and the possibility of re-enrollment after termination to be important in termination decisions. They also reported relatively high levels of difficulty in making termination decisions and perceived a lack of clear termination criteria. Actual termination experiences showed that economic conditions, parent requests, lack of generalization, and insufficient improvement were major factors related to termination difficulties. Third, among the factors considered in termination decisions, parental cooperation, parental economic conditions, Korean language exposure at home, and social and school adaptation were rated as highly important. These findings suggest that termination decisions for multicultural children should not be based only on language test scores or treatment duration, but should also consider parent-related factors, family environment, and adaptation in daily life. Fourth, significant differences were found in some perception variables according to speech-language pathologists’ qualifications, multicultural education experience, and educational level. Correlation analysis showed that higher general perceptions of language therapy for multicultural children were associated with higher perceptions of termination decisions and the importance of related factors. In the exploratory multiple regression analysis, the importance of therapy and clinical factors significantly influenced termination decision perceptions. These findings suggest that termination decisions in speech-language therapy for multicultural children should be understood as a clinical decision-making process that considers not only language assessment results and treatment goal achievement, but also functional communication, parent and family factors, social and school adaptation, cultural background, and institutional support. However, because this study used a cross-sectional survey design and included a limited sample size, the results of the regression analysis should be interpreted as exploratory associations rather than causal effects.
