This master’s thesis addresses sustainable energy conversion, a critical challenge in energy industry, through development of the useful advanced electrocatalysts for water splitting and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this work, two studies are integrated both focusing on designing low-cost, efficient and earth-abundant catalysts aimed at being used in electrochemical devices to replace the precious metal-based electrocatalysts. The urgent need for clean energy solutions as alternative to the environmentally harmful fossil fuel is the motivation behind this research work. First chapter grounded on investigation of the bifunctional electrocatalyst, Fe-ZIF-8@NiAl2O4, whereby spinel NiAl2O4 was integrated with Fe-doped zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (Fe-ZIF-8) forming the composite architecture which leveraged the complimentary properties of both components enabling effective oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at anode and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at cathode. The composite catalyst demonstrated lower overpotential of 231 mV and Tafel slope of 97.45 mV dec-1 to attain current density of 10 mA cm-2 in OER while, in HER to reach current density of 10 mA cm-2, the catalyst required overpotential of only 109 mV demonstrating Tafel slope of 239.29 mV dec-1 implying superior hydrogen production capacity. To showcase its exceptional bifunctional performance for the practical electrochemical water splitting application, Fe-ZIF-8@NiAl2O4 catalyst was used at both cathode and anode simultaneously achieving overall water splitting with cell potential of 1.61 V. Second chapter investigate the development of ZnCoFe@NC-CNT, a trimetallic electrocatalyst well engineered to suppress the harmful Fenton effect by Co-Nx moieties, improved intrinsic activity through Fe-Nx active sites and maximized pore generation from Zinc, all together leading to achieve four electron selectivity, higher durability and lower peroxide yield effective condition for ORR. In the synthesis process, CNT was integrated with the doped ZIF-8 derived trimetallic nanoalloys to make a stable and highly conductive architecture with excellent mass transport properties. The catalyst exhibited exceptional performance showing onset potential of 0.94 V, half wave potential of 0.85 V and minimal peroxide yield. These studies provide a practical design for the durable, cost-effective and promising alternatives to noble-metal catalysts useful in water splitting, fuel cells and metal-air batteries.
