This study designs and develops microlearning-based Korean language learning modules for intermediate Japanese learners, using Korean Wave (Hallyu) content as the medium of instruction. As digital transformation reshapes language education, learner-centered, self-directed, and mobile-friendly formats have become increasingly important. Japanese learners, in particular, show strong consumption of Hallyu content, a preference for colloquial communication, and a high proportion of self-study. Responding to these characteristics, this study aims to implement microlearning beyond theoretical discussionsby constructing an accessible learning environment using general-purpose EduTech tools.
To this end, the study establishes modular design as the concrete implementation method to achieve the overarching goal of microlearning. Drawing on this foundation, it proposes the MAC (MILE–Agile–CLAE) integrated design model. This model combines the MILE model at the macro instructional-systems-design level, the Agile microlearning design at the meso level, and the CLAE (Contextual Knowledge, Linguistic Knowledge, Contextual Application, Expressive Expansion) model at the micro level.
Based on this framework, learning content was developed as short, self-contained videos delivered via YouTube, while self-directed learning activities were integrated into a Google Sites platform. Each module was designed to be independent, allowing learners to flexibly select and combine units in a non-linear sequence according to their needs. A subsequent learner experience analysis involving 11 intermediate Japanese learners confirmed that the provision of non-linear learning paths, concise CLAE-based videos, and Hallyu content positively impacted learners' self-directedness and learning motivation.
This study is significant as it broadens the application of microlearning in Korean language education by proposing the integrated MAC model and practically implementing it through accessible
platforms. However, future research is needed to address the copyright issues regarding the educational use of Hallyu content by establishing clear usage guidelines.
