This study develops a community-engaged, participatory Korean language instructional model designed to extend the educational space beyond traditional, decontextualized classrooms into the local community—conceptualized here as a dynamic field of cultural contexts and communities of practice. By applying this initial model to pilot classes, we examine its empirical effects on foreign learners' self-efficacy and Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC)—the ultimate goals of this framework—to derive a finalized pedagogy.
As Korean language learners increasingly interact with Korean society across academic, professional, and everyday domains, cross-cultural communicative competence has become indispensable. However, traditional Korean language education remains confined to isolated classroom environments. While effective for basic linguistic proficiency, this approach offers limited opportunities to apply knowledge in authentic social contexts. Consequently, learners frequently struggle to transfer classroom knowledge to real-life communication and often lack confidence in social interactions. To bridge this gap, this study proposes a community-engaged, participatory instructional model that organically links classroom learning with community participation, encouraging learners to internalize linguistic knowledge through socially contextualized, meaningful communication.
To achieve this, the study adopts a mixed-methods design, establishing a robust theoretical framework by integrating situated learning, cultural-historical activity, and social learning theories with Byram’s ICC model. This framework restructures the pedagogical environment into a systematic, collective activity system that facilitates learners' "legitimate peripheral participation" (LPP) while preventing contextual chaos. The resulting model follows a progressive hierarchy: classroom language learning, community-engaged field performance, and problem-based learning (PBL) activities.
During the community participation stage, learners extend their education by interacting with local linguistic and cultural resources through community interviews, institutional visits, and social observations. In the final stage, learners engage in PBL to identify real-world issues encountered during field experiences and collaboratively devise solutions, thereby fostering critical thinking, reflection, and active problem-solving.
The proposed model was implemented in an academic-purpose Korean reading class at a Korean university over a 2.5-year period (first semester of 2023 to first semester of 2025). While the primary experiment spanned one academic semester, a two-year pilot implementation was conducted to ensure feasibility. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach with an experimental-control group design, the study evaluated the model's efficacy. Quantitative shifts in self-efficacy and ICC were analyzed via paired-sample t-tests, ANCOVA, correlation, and regression analyses. Qualitative data from reflective journals and task records were coded based on transformative learning and reflective hierarchy frameworks to track subjective growth.
Statistical analysis revealed that the experimental group achieved a significant post-test increase in self-efficacy compared to the control group. Furthermore, task participation positively correlated with gains in ICC sub-dimensions—specifically intercultural openness, contextual knowledge, and interpretive skills—confirming that rich learning contexts serve as significant predictors of intercultural competence. Qualitatively, reflective journals indicated that learners successfully transitioned from passive observers into active social practitioners; in the reading class, they shifted from literal decoding to critical, intertextual interpretation. Experiential feedback from local merchants, public officials, and peers provided vital socio-emotional scaffolding, reducing language anxiety and reinforcing learner agency.
In conclusion, this community-engaged, participatory model effectively enhances learners' self-efficacy and intercultural communicative competence. By anchoring classroom instruction in authentic social participation, it offers a meaningful environment for simultaneous language acquisition and intercultural development. Ultimately, this study underscores a pivotal pedagogical shift: expanding Korean language education from classroom-centric delivery toward socially contextualized, practice-oriented learning. By demonstrating that language acquisition is maximized within authentic communicative systems, this research bridges abstract knowledge and real-world practice, offering concrete guidelines for a participatory, socially integrated multicultural education paradigm.
