This study aims to analyze the patterns of academic Korean summary writing among Vietnamese graduate students and to derive educational implications based on the findings. A summary writing experiment was conducted with 16 Vietnamese graduate students and 14 Vietnamese undergraduate students as a comparison group, and a survey on perceptions, experiences, difficulties, and learning needs regarding summary writing was additionally administered to the graduate students.
The summaries were evaluated across four domains: comprehension of central content, use of summarization rules, appropriateness of language use, and organization. The results showed significant differences between the two groups in language use and organization, while no significant differences were found in central content comprehension and summarization rule use. Graduate students demonstrated relatively higher proficiency in linguistic form, including vocabulary, grammar, and genre conventions, but remained at a level similar to undergraduates in applying summarization strategies such as identifying central content, generalization, and reconstruction. Survey results indicated that participants highly recognized the importance of summary writing but lacked systematic educational experience, expressing strong demand for instruction in text analysis, summarization strategies, and feedback.
Based on these findings, this study presents educational implications organized according to the pre-writing, while-writing, and post-writing stages. This study is significant in that it systematically analyzed the current state of summary writing among Vietnamese graduate students by combining a writing experiment with a survey, and derived educational implications based on the findings, thereby contributing empirical data to the field of Korean education for academic purposes.
