This study focuses on the process by which memories of historical events and figures from China’s Three Kingdoms period in the 3rd century have accumulated as "collective memory" through diverse transmissions and reinterpretations over nearly 2,000 years. These memories were later consolidated and reconstructed into the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong during the Ming Dynasty, establishing themselves as a fixed and expanded "cultural memory." This study aims to analyze the "cultural landscapes" formed by these cultural memories through contemporary relics and cultural resources, reconstructing them from the perspective of "Cultural Routes" by integrating cultural landscape and memory theories. While existing scholarship on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms has tended to focus on literary interpretations, individual sites, or tourism development, this research emphasizes the networks formed through the interaction between character narratives, space, and cultural memory.
The research methodology employs a case study approach combining literature review and field surveys. Based on relevant historical records, the trajectories of key figures were organized, and corresponding relics were visited to examine the arrangement of actual landscapes and heritage management practices. To systematically implement the analytical results, a website was developed to visually present the structure and narrative of the cultural routes, enabling exploration of the research findings in a digital environment.
The findings confirm that the cultural routes of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms are not merely physical paths of movement but a "network of memory landscapes" formed by the spatial rearrangement of historical events and narratives over time.
First, Cao Cao’s cultural route is structured around a political narrative that unfolds in stages: the formation of a power base, the establishment of hegemony, limitations and frustrations of power, the institutionalization of power during dynastic transition, and the conclusion of memory.
Second, Guan Yu’s cultural route follows the stages of loyalty and anguish, the formation and practice of loyalty, the defense of Jingzhou and regional heroization, posthumous deification, and elevation to sainthood. This demonstrates how communities select and reinforce memories, confirming that the modes of spatial representation and the sustainability of landscapes vary according to the nature of the memory.
In conclusion, cultural landscapes are not physically fixed environments but are continuously reconstructed through the interaction of power, ideology, and a society’s cultural memory. Even when certain sites do not align with actual historical events or are spaces reconstructed in later periods, they possess profound cultural significance, illustrating that the value of such heritage is forged through the community’s processes of memory and symbolization.
The academic significance of this study is as follows: First, it attempts to expand the concept of cultural routes by defining them as structures of memory rather than mere spatial paths. Second, it proposes an analytical framework that integrally applies cultural landscape theory and memory theory. Third, by establishing a website that visualizes these research findings, it extends the potential for broader academic and public engagement.
