This study aims to analyze humor elements in Chinese sketch comedy programs and to explore effective translation strategies for rendering humor from Chinese into Korean. The research is based on ten selected scripts from two popular Chinese sketch comedy shows, Super Sketch Show (一年一度喜剧大赛, Seasons 1–2) and Amazing Night (喜人奇妙夜, Seasons 1–2). Drawing on Raskin’s (1991) humor theory and Delabastita’s (1996) translation strategies for humor, this study investigates how
humor can be effectively conveyed across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
With the rapid development of digital media and the widespread circulation of cultural content, sketch comedy—originating in the United States in the mid-20th century—has regained popularity through online platforms. As it adapts to different cultural contexts, its form and content have diversified, reflecting distinct national characteristics. One of the defining features of sketch comedy is its dense concentration of comedic “game points,” which function as key mechanisms for generating humor and advancing narrative structure. This highlights that the primary goal of sketch comedy lies in maximizing comedic effect.
Humor, as both a cultural and cognitive phenomenon, plays a significant role in modern society by alleviating psychological stress, facilitating social interaction, and enhancing emotional engagement. Audiences consume comedic content for various motivations, including emotional resonance and vicarious satisfaction. However, despite the popularity of such programs within their original cultural contexts, their cross-cultural dissemination remains limited. A major contributing factor is the difficulty of translating humor effectively, particularly in subtitle translation, where linguistic and cultural nuances are often lost.
Although interest in humor translation has grown in recent years, it remains an underdeveloped area within translation studies. Due to its strong cultural specificity, humor presents significant challenges in cross-cultural communication. Effective humor translation requires not only linguistic competence but also a deep understanding of cultural context and audience expectations. Therefore, identifying and applying appropriate translation strategies is essential for preserving humor effects while minimizing cultural barriers.
This study addresses the relative lack of research on subtitle translation in sketch comedy, particularly in the Chinese–Korean context. By analyzing representative cases, it seeks to contribute to the development of practical and theoretical frameworks for humor translation and to provide a foundation for future research in this field.
