This study exam ines consumers’ AI anxiety when using artificial intelligence (AI) recommendation services on online shopping platforms. Although these services support information search and product choice through personalized product information, they may also cause anxiety related to personal informat ion use, opaque recommendat ion cr i ter ia, algor i thm ic fai rness, and service understanding. This study invest igates how AI anxiety leads to AI service trust and brand engagement through consumers’ coping processes.
AI anxiety is conceptual ized as four types: learning anxiety, privacy anxiety, fairness anxiety, and transparency anxiety. Drawing on Protection Motivation Theory and Social Cognitive Theory, this study proposes a model in which AI anxiety forms consumer protection motivation, which then leads to brand engagement through problem-solving coping self-efficacy, emotion-regulation coping self-efficacy, perceived control, and AI service trust. This study extends Protection Motivation Theory to the AI recommendation service context by explaining that consumer protection motivation may promote information seeking, learning, and adaptation, thereby contributing to coping self-efficacy. The moderating role of AI literacy is also examined.
A survey was conducted among consumers with experience using AI recommendation services on online shopping platforms, and 421 valid responses were analyzed. The data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 26.0. Structural equation modeling tested the relationships among the main variables and indirect effects, while PROCESS Macro examined the moderating effects of AI literacy. The results show that all four types of AI anxiety had significant positive effects on consumer protection motivation, with privacy anxiety showing the strongest effect, followed by transparency anxiety, fairness anxiety, and learning anxiety. Consumer protection motivation significantly influenced both types of coping self-efficacy, which then led to perceived control. Perceived control increased AI service trust, which significantly influenced brand engagement. AI literacy strengthened the effects of privacy anxiety and fairness anxiety on consumer protection motivation, but not those of learning anxiety and transparency anxiety. It also positively strengthened the effect of consumer protection motivation on problem-solving coping self-efficacy, while its moderating effect on emotion-regulation coping self-efficacy was not significant.
This study shows that consumers’ AI anxiety in AI recommendation services can be transformed into AI service trust and brand engagement through protection motivation and coping processes, rather than merely leading to avoidance. Theoretically, it applies Protection Motivation Theory to AI recommendation services and suggests, from Social Cognitive Theory, that information seeking, learning, and adaptation after protection motivation can foster coping self-efficacy. Practically, online shopping platforms should consider personal information use, algorithmic fairness, explainability, and user control when designing and managing AI recommendation services.
