This study examines whether the effects of Sociotropic and Egocentric economic evaluations on democratic support vary across generations in South Korea. While previous studies have generally assumed that the political effects of economic evaluations operate uniformly across citizens, this study argues that generational differences in accumulated economic experiences may structurally condition the relationship between economic evaluations and democratic support. To test this argument, this study utilizes the South Korean data from the Asian Barometer Survey (ABS) Wave1 (2003) through 6 (2022). Respondents are classified into four generational cohorts: the Industrialization Generation, the 386 Generation, the IMF Generation, and the MZ Generation and the hypotheses are tested using both Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Logistic Regression analyses.
The findings show that the effect of Egocentric economic evaluations on democratic support is strongest among the MZ Generation, providing overall support for Hypothesis 2. In contrast, the effect of sociotropic economic evaluations is stronger among the IMF and MZ Generations than among the older generations, leading to the rejection of Hypothesis 1. These findings suggest that younger generations are more likely to evaluate democracy in light of perceived economic performance. Drawing on Easton's (1975) distinction between specific support and diffuse support, this study argues that democratic support among younger generations exhibits characteristics of specific support, responding more sensitively to economic performance, whereas democratic support among older generations is relatively more consistent with the characteristics of diffuse support. This pattern is interpreted as asymmetric performance-based democratic support.
This study contributes to the literature by challenging the conventional assumption that the political effects of economic evaluations operate uniformly across citizens. By conceptualizing generation as a key structural condition that moderates the relationship between economic evaluations and democratic support, it addresses an important theoretical gap in the literature on democratic support. The findings also suggest that alleviating economic insecurity among younger generations constitutes an important policy challenge for strengthening democratic support.
