    Advisor : Professor Shin, Myung-Sun Ph.D.

This study aimed to compare the articulatory and phonological abilities of mothers and their children across three language groups (English, Vietnamese, and Chinese), including subfactors such as Percent Consonants Correct (PCC), Revised Percent Consonants Correct (PCC-R), Percent Vowels Correct (PVC), Proportion of Whole-Word Correctness (PWC), Phonological Mean Length of Utterance (PMLU), and Proportion of Whole-Word Proximity (PWP). In addition, it examined phonological error types and patterns and analyzed correlations among subfactors.
Participants included 62 individuals: 12 English-speaking mothers and their children, 10 Vietnamese-speaking mothers and their children, and 9 Chinese-speaking mothers and their children, all residing in the Busan and Gyeongnam regions of Korea.
    The results were as follows.
First, among children, the Vietnamese group demonstrated significantly lower PCC and PCC-R values than the English and Chinese groups, and significantly lower PMLU scores than the Chinese group. PWC tended to be lower in the Vietnamese group, though not to a statistically significant degree, and no significant group differences were observed in PVC or PWP. Across all language groups, substitution was the most frequent error type, although the specific error patterns differed by language. The children with English-speaking mothers most frequently exhibited lenition, alveolar deletion, initial consonant deletion, liquid deletion, alveolar assimilation, and vowel substitution; children with Vietnamese-speaking mothers showed alveolar deletion, initial consonant deletion, lenition, liquid deletion, and vowel substitution; and children with Chilnese-speaking mothers most commonly demonstrated alveolar assimilation, lenition, coda deletion, and stop deletion, followed by insertion, alveolar deletion, and liquid deletion. Meanwhile, liquid deletion, alveolar deletion, and lenition. were the prominent errors that all three language groups commonly exhibited.
Second, among mothers, Vietnamese speakers showed significantly higher PVC than English speakers and significantly higher PWP than Chinese speakers, while no significant group differences were found in PCC, PCC-R, PWC, or PMLU. Substitution was also the most common error type in all three groups, though the detailed patterns varied. English-speaking mothers showed lenition, aspiration, vowel substitution, aspirated sound assimilation, and tensing errors; Vietnamese-speaking mothers showed lenition, aspiration, tensing, coda deletion, and deaspiration; and Chinese-speaking mothers showed coda deletion, stop deletion, velar deletion, lenition, insertion, and vowel substitution. Meanwhile, lenition was the prominent error that all three language groups commonly exhibited.
Third, correlational analysis revealed that only in the Vietnamese group were mothers’ PVC scores significantly and positively correlated with all subfactors of their children’s articulatory and phonological abilities. No statistically significant correlations were found in the English or Chinese groups.
These findings confirm cross-linguistic differences in articulatory and phonological abilities between mothers and children and in the relationships among their subfactors. The results suggest that clinical interventions for multicultural children should consider language-specific articulatory and phonological developmental characteristics to establish effective, tailored intervention strategies.
