Working memory is a core cognitive system that temporarily stores and manipulates linguistic information, serving as the foundation for higher-order reading comprehension tasks such as story comprehension, identifying main ideas, and causal reasoning. Children with mild intellectual disabilities often struggle to retain information presented early in a text or integrate causal relationships between events due to limited working memory capacity and inefficient language processing. Therefore, this study aimed to verify the effect of vocabulary-focused working memory training on story structure-based reading comprehension abilities and to examine changes and retention levels for each story grammatical element.
The participants were five 10–11-year-old children with mild intellectual disabilities from the Busan and Gyeongnam regions, meeting criteria including a K-WISC-V full scale IQ of 55–70, REVT equivalent age of 10–11 years, and sentence comprehension skills at or above the 3rd grade level. The intervention was a vocabulary-focused working memory training program consisting of four stages—free recall, demonstration, auditory language memory, and categorization—based on Ham Eun-sun's (2008) procedure. It was administered individually over 18 sessions. Assessment utilized items developed by the researcher based on Park Min-jung's (2009) narrative grammar framework, administered at baseline, intervention, and maintenance stages. It measured the positive response rate for six elements: characters, setting, events, internal reactions, problem-solving, and outcomes. Analysis applied a multiple-baseline design, focusing on visual analysis of level changes, variability, immediate changes, and overlap. Detailed reviews were also conducted to enhance the reliability of the results.
The research results are as follows.
First, the positive response rate for story structure-based reading comprehension significantly improved for all children after the intervention compared to baseline, showing particularly large increases in elements requiring discourse-level meaning integration, such as events and outcomes. Additionally, some children demonstrated consistent increases in reading engagement and task persistence. Second, analysis by story grammar element revealed improvements not only in characters and setting but also in higher-order meaning elements like internal reactions, problem solving, and outcomes. Some children strengthened their inference-based comprehension abilities, such as explaining emotional vocabulary in relation to the situation. Third, in the maintenance assessment, most children either stably maintained or further improved their performance two weeks after the intervention ended, confirming that the memory strategies and story structure recognition acquired during the intervention were transferred long-term.
In summary, vocabulary-focused working memory training supports improvements in story structure-based reading comprehension for children with mild intellectual disabilities and demonstrated positive effects on the maintenance and generalization of understanding specific story grammar elements and strategy use. This study suggests that a vocabulary-based working memory approach can serve as practical evidence for reading interventions with school-age children with intellectual disabilities.
