단편영화 〈불꽃이 추락할 때〉 : 가족의 정서적 갈등 연출 중심으로 = Short Film 〈When the Fireworks Fall〉 :Centered on the Direction of Family Emotional Conflicts

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 연구자가 연출한 단편영화 〈불꽃이 추락할 때〉를 대상으로, 감독의 창작 관점에서 작품의 주제 의식, 서사 구조, 영상 언어, 공간 구성, 편집 방식 및 음악 활용을 중심으로 분석한 연구이다.
영화는 27세 직장인 해연과 아버지 김대국 사이의 복합적인 부녀 관계를 다룬다. 어린 시절 가정폭력으로 인해 어머니가 집을 떠나게 되었고, 해연은 학업을 중단한 채 어린 나이에 독립적인 삶을 시작하게 된다. 시간이 흐른 뒤 암 진단을 받은 아버지와 다시 마주하게 되면서, 해연은 오랫동안 억눌러 왔던 감정과 직면하게 된다. 침묵과 거리감, 그리고 절제된 분위기 속에서 해연은 아버지로부터 받은 상처를 잊지 못하면서도, 동시에 그를 향한 감정을 완전히 끊어낼 수 없는 자신의 모습을 마주하게 된다.
작품은 전체적으로 차분하고 절제된 정서를 바탕으로, 주인공의 미세한 감정 변화를 중심으로 전개된다. 영화 속 불꽃놀이는 반복적으로 등장하는 주요 시각적 이미지로서, 단순한 화해의 상징이 아니라 주인공이 오랫동안 잊고 있던 짧지만 따뜻한 행복의 순간을 상기시키는 매개로 기능한다. 또한 작품은 가족의 화해 자체를 이야기하기보다, 인물이 자신의 복합적인 감정을 다시 바라보고 이해해 가는 과정을 담고자 하였다.
연출 측면에서는 고정 쇼트와 롱테이크를 중심으로 한 관찰적 시선을 통해 감정의 흐름이 자연스럽게 축적되도록 구성하였다. 또한 미장센, 공간 구성, 인물의 행동과 시선의 변화를 유기적으로 결합함으로써 느린 리듬 속에서 인물의 내면과 관계의 변화를 섬세하게 드러내고자 하였다. 이를 통해 본 작품은 가족 관계 안에 공존하는 사랑과 상처, 그리고 쉽게 설명할 수 없는 복합적인 감정을 절제된 영상 언어를 통해 표현하고자 하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study presents a systematic analysis of the short filmWhen Fireworks Fall, directed by the author, from the perspective of film directing. The study focuses on the film’s thematic expression, narrative structure, visual language, spatial design, editing style, and use of music.
The film tells the story of Haiyan, a 27-year-old working woman, and her complicated relationship with her father, Kim Da-guk. After her mother left the family because of domestic violence during her childhood, Haiyan lost the opportunity to continue her education and was forced to become independent at an early age. Years later, when her father is diagnosed with cancer, she is compelled to confront the emotions that she has long suppressed. Amid silence, distance, and emotional restraint, Haiyan struggles between the pain caused by her father and the emotional bond that she has never been able to sever.
The film adopts a restrained and quiet tone, focusing on the subtle emotional changes of the protagonist. Fireworks serve as a recurring visual motif throughout the film. Rather than symbolizing reconciliation, they represent a fleeting sense of warmth and happiness, becoming an emotional medium through which Haiyan gradually confronts and reexamines her feelings toward her father. Through silence, spatial distance, and everyday details, the film explores the process of understanding one's own complicated emotions rather than presenting a conventional narrative of family reconciliation.
From a directing perspective, the film employs static shots, long takes, and an observational visual style to create emotional continuity and immersion. Through the organic integration of mise-en-scène, spatial composition, and character performance, emotions are allowed to unfold gradually within a slow rhythm. Ultimately, the film seeks to portray the coexistence of love and pain within family relationships and to explore the possibility of confronting and understanding one’s own emotions.
