This study is an ontological inquiry into the process of breaking free from fixed biological forms, reinterpreting surrounding flora and fauna as new narrative subjects, and giving shape to this reinterpretation through the formal language of "deconstruction and reassembly." Throughout the history of art, flora and fauna have long been treated as objects for human visual pleasure or as tools of conceptual symbolism. Rejecting this instrumental perspective, this study focuses on the individual vitality inherent in all things and the narrative possibilities concealed beneath their surfaces, seeking to explore how far the boundaries of existence can be extended.
The theoretical framework begins with an analysis of the generative philosophy of Taoism. Laozi's concept of water and wu-we1 (non-action), along with Zhuangzi's theory of the gathering and dispersal of qi as a cycle of life, provide the conceptual foundation for the formal approach in which bones - symbols of extinction - are reborn as the ground from which new life emerges. This is followed by an examination of Gilles Deleuze's philosophy of becoming. The concept of the "Body without Organs (BwO)" serves as the theoretical basis for dismantling the fixed framework of the organism and expanding the mutability of existence, while the movement of "Becoming" provides the ontological ground for the hybrid iconography, understood as a process m which two heterogeneous beings transform each other and generate new possibilities of life in the space between them. The principle of "Deterritorialization and Reterritorialization" offers the philosophical basis for a formal cycle in which deconstructed fragments form new relational networks on the plane of immanence that is the underwater space.
In the formal analysis, this study explores the contemporary reinterpretation of classical Eastern painting theories: Gu Kaizhi's Chuanshen Xiezhao (Conveying Spirit through Portraiture) and Yixing Xieshen (Conveying Spirit through Form), and Xie He's Qiyun Shengdong (Spirit Resonance and Life Movement) and Gufa Yongbi (Bone Method in Brushwork). The paradoxical methodology of reaching the deeper spirit (shen) of existence precisely through the deconstruction of form is understood as a contemporary practice of Yixing Xieshen. Two reference artists are examined: the early Joseon painter An Gyeon and the modern Western artist Frida Kahlo. An Gyeon's Dream Journey to the Peach Blossom Land is analyzed for its realization of an unrealistic ideal space, while Kahlo's works such as Roots (1943) are examined as a formal lineage in which the boundaries between the human body and plant life are dissolved and the two are integrated into a single organic being. Furthermore, through an examination of the formal lineage of hybrid iconography in Eastern and Western mythology - including the human-animal figures of the Shanhaijing, the iconography of Fuxi and Nuwa, and the Greek mythological figure of Medusa - this study confirms that the present senes 1s situated within the tradition of hybrid iconographic representation.
The series Room of Strange Beings consists of three color-based series: green, pink, and blue. The green series centers on Suryeon(失蓮), a fictional plant species created by the artist, exploring hybrid iconography in which goldfish and the human body are combined, and taking as its theme the duality of the water's surface as a liminal space. The pink series develops a narrative of beauty and symbiosis through underwater creatures - coral and sea anemone - and gives form to the deterritorialization of existence through the figure of a human whose body has been taken over by coral. The blue series, inspired by conjoined twins, explores the fragmented self of a single existence and the plurality of being.
In terms of form, a distinctive background space 1s achieved by diluting Korean painting pigments to an extreme degree and applying multiple thin layers onto unsized sunji (pure hanji), allowing the pigment to permeate deep into the fibers of the paper. This 1s a material enactment of the Taoist principle of wu-wei generation. Over this ground, the precise and insistent linework of colored pencil - a "contemporary bone method" - creates a stark visual contrast with the fluid diffusion of the background, endowing the pictorial surface with a taut sense of vitality.
Grounded in the dual philosophical foundations of Taoist generative thought and Deleuzian philosophy of becoming, and realized through the contemporary reinterpretation of classical painting theory and the material properties of sunji, this study gives formal expression to the process by which the boundaries of existence are deconstructed and new narratives of life are born. In doing so, it seeks to expand the material boundaries of contemporary Korean painting and to restore the ontological value of life that has been marginalized m contemporary art.
