This study analyzes how the Korea-Japan Dokdo/Takeshima territorial dispute has been perceived and explained in China. Previous studies on Dokdo have mainly focused on the historical title, international legal arguments, effective control, and postwar settlement between Korea and Japan. In contrast, this study examines the issue from the perspective of China, a non-direct party to the dispute, in order to understand how the Dokdo issue is situated within China’s perception of Japan, Northeast Asian regional order, and historical problems.
The temporal scope of this study covers the period from 2005, when Shimane Prefecture in Japan established “Takeshima Day,” to 2025. The main research materials include official statements and documents from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reports from major Chinese media outlets such as People’s Daily, Xinhua News Agency, and Global Times, as well as academic papers and research materials from Chinese scholars. This study employs textual analysis, content analysis, literature analysis, and comparative analysis to examine the discourse of the Chinese government, media, and academia.
The findings of this study show that China’s perception of the Dokdo/Takeshima dispute cannot be simply described as either neutrality or support for Korea. The Chinese government generally avoids making a direct judgment on the sovereignty of Dokdo/Takeshima. However, it tends to connect Japan’s territorial claims with issues of historical perception, reflection on aggression, regional trust, and peace in Northeast Asia. Chinese media usually reports the dispute as a diplomatic conflict between Korea and Japan, while using cautious expressions such as “Dokdo, called Takeshima in Japan.” At the same time, media reports often link the dispute to Japan’s history textbooks, diplomatic documents, defense white papers, and “Takeshima Day.” Chinese academic discussions also do not primarily aim to determine sovereignty. Instead, they tend to introduce the historical and legal arguments of Korea and Japan, while interpreting the issue in relation to Japan’s colonial past, postwar order, Korea-Japan relations, the Diaoyu Dao/Senkaku Islands dispute, and Northeast Asian regional stability.
In conclusion, China’s perception of the Dokdo/Takeshima dispute is characterized by a combination of “reservation on sovereignty judgment” and “criticism of Japan’s historical perception.” This study contributes to existing Dokdo research by introducing a third-party perspective and by showing that the Dokdo issue is not only a bilateral territorial dispute between Korea and Japan, but also an important case for understanding historical memory, territorial discourse, and regional order in Northeast Asia.
