Recently, significant shifts in the political structure of South Korea are increasingly emerging among the youth. Segments of the youth overtly supported President Yoon Suk-Yeol who was undergoing an impeachment trial in the Constitutional Court because of the illegal declaration of martial law. Undoubtedly, President Yoon was an authoritarian leader with a far-right orientation. Therefore, the overt support shown by the youth for President Yoon came as a profound shock to many South Koreans. These changes mean that the South Korean political system, which has remained relatively stable since the democratization of 1987, is facing a new structural cleavage.
The South Korean political system has maintained a stable structure since 1987. A primary factor contributing to this stability is the institutional combination of presidentialism and the plurality voting system. Furthermore, the regional party system has functioned as a critical structural determinant of this enduring stability. Despite inherent issues such as wasted votes and regional conflict, these two mechanisms have effectively constrained the entry of radical parties into the political mainstream to a certain extent.
However, the recent rise of far-right radicalization among the young generation poses a significant challenge to the centrist political culture in South Korea. In particular, a huge swing among young male voters in the 20th (2022) and 21st (2025) presidential elections suggests a possible restructuring of South Korea’s traditional political landscape. These changes cannot be explained simply as short-term electoral strategies or temporary political phenomena; rather, they reflect the emergence of new political identities among the younger generation in South Korea. Furthermore, the expansion of far-right political discourse means that far-right groups in South Korea cannot be regarded as a marginal phenomenon no longer.
In light of these observations, this study aims to systematically analyze the recent rise of far-right radicalization among South Korean youth from a political science perspective. This study does not regard the far-right radicalization of the youth as a mere generational issue or a temporary political reaction. Rather, it conceptualizes this phenomenon as a new and complex socio-political framework shaped by the interaction of economic conditions, anti-feminism, and social media platforms such as YouTube, X, and Instagram.
This study uses a qualitative research approach that integrates a literature review, case analysis, and an examination of political discourse surrounding the far-right radicalization of South Korean youth. First, this study will develop a theoretical discussion on the relationship between the far-right, fascism, populism, and conservatism by reviewing prior studies in sociology, religious studies, and political science. Second, this research will analyze the shifting political support patterns among young male voters observed in the 20th (2022) and 21st (2025) presidential elections in South Korea. Third, it will explore how new media platforms, such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, have contributed to the far-right radicalization of the youth.
Subsequently, this study aims to examine the factors that have facilitated the rise of far-right radicalization among the youth, particularly within the context of South Korea’s stable political system since democratization. The results of this research indicate that the radicalization of these segments is rooted in a complex interplay of the following factors. Specifically, these factors include overwhelming housing costs and the perceived impossibility of homeownership, restricted access to quality jobs amidst intensified competition, and prolonged economic stagnation. Furthermore, they encompass resentment toward older generations—perceived as monopolizing economic prosperity—and the proliferation of fake news and exclusionary discourses through digital platforms such as YouTube, X, and Instagram. Moreover, far-right youth in South Korea tend to attribute their socio-economic insecurity to structural biases, specifically pointing to the egalitarian policies implemented by the liberal Moon Jae-In administration.
In conclusion, this study summarizes the primary findings and key issues discussed, offering a critical perspective on youth far-right movements in South Korea. It further examines how the radicalization of young men impacts contemporary politics and society. This trend has severely undermined policy agendas, electoral issues, and the structure of political competition. Ultimately, their extreme ideologies—rooted in hatred, exclusion, and discrimination—threaten the core democratic values of discussion, compromise, and deliberation.
In short, the socio-economic conditions, media environments, and political behaviors of today’s youth may have long-term negative impacts on South Korea’s democratic culture. Therefore, this study offers an important point of departure for systematically conceptualizing and analyzing the youth far-right phenomenon, which has been largely overlooked within South Korean political science.
Furthermore, future research on the far right should move beyond simply diagnosing the phenomenon. Instead, it should focus on developing practical solutions and policy proposals that can reduce radicalization and ensure the long-term sustainability of the democratic system of South Korea.
