As the scale of international student mobility continues to expand, international students have emerged as an important group influencing national image formation and the effectiveness of public diplomacy. Previous studies have primarily focused on the effects of direct experiential factors, such as cultural adaptation, interpersonal relationships, and study-abroad experiences, on international students’ attitudes toward their host countries. However, relatively little attention has been paid to the role of the host country’s media environment. In recent years, negative reports, discriminatory remarks, and anti-China and anti-Chinese content have increasingly appeared in Korean media. Such content may have significant implications for the emotional responses, social perceptions, and attitudes toward Korea among Chinese international students in Korea. Against this backdrop, this study examines how exposure to anti-China and anti-Chinese content in Korean media influences Chinese international students’ attitudes toward Korea and explores the psychological mechanisms underlying this process.
Drawing on Affect-as-Information Theory, Social Identity Theory, and intergroup relations research, this study develops and tests a conceptual model linking exposure to anti-China and anti-Chinese media content, negative emotions, hostile perceptions, psychological distance, and attitudes toward Korea. In this framework, negative emotions, hostile perceptions, and psychological distance represent emotional, cognitive, and relational psychological mechanisms, respectively. To more accurately assess the influence of media content, perceptions of Korea and cultural adaptation were included as control variables. Data were collected through a survey of Chinese international students residing in Korea, yielding 300 valid responses. The proposed model was analyzed using path analysis.
The results indicate that exposure to anti-China and anti-Chinese media content significantly increases negative emotions among Chinese international students(β= .340, p〈 .001). Negative emotions, in turn, significantly strengthen hostile perceptions of Koreans(β= .238, p〈 .001), while hostile perceptions significantly increase psychological distance from Koreans(β= .435, p〈 .001). Increased psychological distance was found to significantly reduce overall attitudes toward Korea(β= −.242, p〈 .001). In addition, negative emotions exerted a direct negative effect on attitudes toward Korea(β= −.229, p〈 .001). Bootstrap analyses further revealed that exposure to anti-China and anti-Chinese media content not only affects attitudes toward Korea directly through negative emotions but also exerts a significant indirect effect through the sequential pathway of negative emotions, hostile perceptions, and psychological distance. Furthermore, both perceptions of Korea and cultural adaptation were found to have significant positive effects on attitudes toward Korea.
These findings demonstrate that anti-China and anti-Chinese content in Korean media not only evokes negative emotions among Chinese international students but also influences their cognitive evaluations of Koreans and their perceived relational distance from them, ultimately shaping their attitudes toward Korea. In other words, the effects of media content extend beyond the simple transmission of information and operate through a sequential psychological process involving emotion, cognition, and interpersonal relations. This study provides new empirical evidence for understanding how media environments influence host-country attitude formation among international students.
