Florian Zeller's 〈La Mère〉 unfolds through the perspective of Anne, a mother suffering from empty nest syndrome. Through the repetition of a fragmented daily life and the reconstruction of characters, time, and space, the play allows the events of the "here and now" to coexist with Anne's past and fantasies. In other words, it embodies Anne's viewpoint—like infinitely overlapping mirror images—in which the truth becomes indistinguishable. In this way, La Mère enables the audience to perceive her obsessive symptoms through the very gaze of a mother battling depression, and further leads them to understand Anne's suffering and to reflect on the meaning of family.
The purpose of this study is to realize, through the character Pierre, the qualities of the play that provoke the audience's contemplation. To this end, the study sought to interpret and approach each Pierre—reconstructed in every scene—as a distinct character with a different objective. However, relying solely on the behavioral patterns revealed in the text posed limitations in securing the internal validity of this branching character. Jean Baudrillard's theory of the simulacrum was therefore applied to establish the performative logic of the branching figure. Pierre, reconstructed scene by scene, was interpreted as a simulacrum born through the process of simulation within Anne's mental world. Using this four-stage concept of the simulacrum as the fundamental basis for character analysis, Pierre—who exhibits similar objectives across scenes—was categorized into four types. As a result, the following were derived: (1) a husband leaving on a business trip for the sake of his family(a simulacral character reflecting reality within Anne's consciousness) ; (2) a husband addicted to work and neglecting his family(a simulacral character in which reality is distorted by Anne's anxiety) ; (3) a husband using a business trip as a pretext for a hidden purpose(a simulacral character in which reality is concealed by Anne's suspicion) ; and (4) a husband immersed in pleasure with the young woman and excluding his wife(a simulacral character newly substituted, detached from any reality, solely through Anne's suspicion).
In the practical process, in order to induce cognitive confusion in the audience by intersecting the derived simulacral characters of Pierre scene by scene, Rudolf Laban's "Effort Actions"—an analytical system of body movement—were introduced. Based on the inner motivation of each of Pierre's simulacral characters, four types of physical images were constructed through Effort Actions. Furthermore, a practical foundation was established that allows these four physical images of Pierre to be intentionally intersected even within a single scene.
In conclusion, this study derived Pierre—reconstructed through Anne's unstable gaze—into four simulacral characters, and gave form to each physical image by employing Laban's Effort Actions. It further realized the intersection of these simulacral characters scene by scene in order to trigger cognitive confusion in the audience. This series of processes is considered to open up concrete possibilities for the realization of a performative mode of acting that leads the audience to sensorially experience Anne's depressive gaze.
