This study examined the educational value of Songseo Samseolgi and its applicability to elementary music education. Recent traditional music education has emphasized diverse musical experiences that foster students’ musical competencies and cultural literacy. However, traditional vocal music materials presented in elementary music textbooks are largely limited to folk songs, pansori, and sijo, while Songseo has not been included in school music education. Against this background, this study explored the characteristics of Songseo Samseolgi and examined its potential use in elementary music education.
The study employed a literature-based approach, analyzing the 2022 Revised Music Curriculum and its achievement standards, as well as traditional vocal music materials included in Ice Cream elementary music textbooks for grades three through six. Based on this analysis, the characteristics and educational value of Songseo Samseolgi were investigated, and teaching–learning methods and lesson plans were developed.
The findings of the study are as follows. First, Songseo was found to provide an integrated musical experience by combining language and music. Second, an analysis of elementary music textbooks revealed that traditional vocal music materials consisted mainly of folk songs, pansori, and sijo, while Songseo was absent. Nevertheless, Songseo demonstrated potential as an educational resource that enables students to experience the integration of language and music. Third, Songseo Samseolgi was found to possess educational characteristics that could contribute to the development of musical expression, understanding of traditional culture, creative thinking, and communication skills. Fourth, Songseo Samseolgi was identified as a traditional vocal music genre through which students could experience expression, appreciation, and creative activities in an integrated manner. Fifth, teaching–learning methods and lesson plans centered on appreciation, understanding, expression, and creative activities were proposed, providing practical instructional approaches applicable to elementary school settings.
This study is meaningful in that it examined Songseo, a traditional vocal genre that has received relatively little attention in school education, from the perspective of elementary music education and identified its educational value and applicability. Furthermore, the proposed teaching–learning methods and lesson plans provide foundational resources for the practical implementation of Songseo education in schools.
