This study aims to demonstrate that the essence of the dependent origination (pratītyasamutpāda) doctrine in early Buddhism lies not in explaining a linear, deterministic flow of time, but rather in its non-linear causal structure operating in the "here and now.“
Non-linear causality refers to a causal relationship wherein cause A influences effect B, but B can simultaneously influence A. Mutual causality is a representative form of non-linear causality, diagrammed as A⇄B. One might question whether the dependent origination of mutual identity and mutual interpenetration (相卽相入) already represents mutual causality. However, a comprehensive review of the early Buddhist canons—the five Nikāyas and the four Āgamas—reveals that explicit textual references to non-linear causality are rare, appearing almost exclusively in passages discussing the mutual causality between consciousness (viññāṇa) and mentality-materiality (nāmarūpa), such as in the ‘Nagara-sutta’ of the Saṃyutta Nikāya and the ‘Mahānidāna-sutta’ of the Dīgha Nikāya. In particular, the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination (dvādaśa-naidānika-pratītyasamutpāda), which begins with the formula “When this exists, that comes to be; with the arising of this, that arises” and enumerates twelve factors from ignorance (avijjā) to aging-and-death (jarāmaraṇa), appears to permit only a linear causality (avijjā→saṅkhārā→viññāṇa...), rendering a non-linear model (avijjā⇄saṅkhārā⇄viññāṇa...) seemingly impossible.
Crucially, if the Twelve Links are interpreted strictly as linear causality, several profound problems arise. First, because the cessation of any subsequent link would be impossible before ignorance is completely eradicated, there would be no opportunity to attain enlightenment through other breakthrough points. This invalidates the doctrinal justification for mindfulness practices that minimize the intervention of the self by controlling feelings (vedanā) or craving (taṇhā) at the locus of sensory contact (phassa). In short, the possibility of intervening in the middle of the twelve links, bypassing ignorance, disappears.
Second, it invalidates the everyday experience of healthy self-reflection and new resolutions made by ordinary individuals. Human beings, though driven by their existential and survival-oriented instincts, frequently reflect on their past, emulate the lives of others, and plan new trajectories. Even the Buddha's attainment of sainthood by eradicating the three poisons (trivisha) was largely driven by intermediary aspirations (bodhicitta) and awakenings. This underscores why the Twelve Links must be, and inherently are, a non-linear causal process.
Accordingly, this study investigates the possibility of non-linear causality among individual links, focusing on the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination. First, this paper examines the dependent origination doctrine in the Suttanipāta, which predates the Nikāyas and Āgamas and is regarded as the archetype of the Twelve Links. By comparing the ‘Kalahavivāda-sutta’ of the Suttanipāta with the dependent origination models in the ‘Madhupiṇḍika-sutta’ of the Majjhima Nikāya and the ‘Sakkapañha-sutta’ of the Dīgha Nikāya, this study establishes their close interrelationship. Notably, through the dependent origination model in the ‘Dvayatānupassanā-sutta’, this paper demonstrates that thirteen factors, including upadhi (attachments/requisites of existence), do not generate suffering in a strictly sequential manner; rather, any given factor can immediately become the root cause of suffering, thereby illustrating the possibility of non-linear causality.
Second, this study classifies the formulations of dependent origination ranging from 2-link to 12-link models, centering on the ‘Nidāna Saṃyutta’ of the Saṃyutta Nikāya, and enumerates the representative suttas. This demonstrates that the 12-link model is not the sole formulation of dependent origination, implying that the Buddha employed diverse variations of the doctrine to effectively present the mechanism of the origination and cessation of suffering to his disciples. If the Twelve Links do not rigidly commence with ignorance, it secures the legitimacy of intervening mid-process through practice at the links of contact (phassa), feeling (vedanā), or craving (taṇhā). Consequently, liberation does not require a strictly linear, sequential progression.
Third, this paper explores the potential for non-linear causality across each link from ignorance to aging-and-death. It demonstrates that regarding the characteristics of each link and the relationships between preceding and succeeding links, the dynamics can be formulated as A⇄B rather than merely A→B. Although the mutual relationship between consciousness and mentality-materiality is the only explicitly stated A⇄B dynamics in the early texts, a contextual analysis reveals ample potential for A⇄B across other links. For instance, regarding the relationship between ignorance (avijjā) and volitional formations (saṅkhārā), based on the scriptural teaching that "with taints (āsava) there is ignorance, and with ignorance there are taints," this paper establishes the validity of the schema avijjā⇄saṅkhārā, given that volitional formations are what activate and sustain taints.
Furthermore, the relationship between volitional formations (saṅkhārā) and consciousness (viññāṇa) can also be viewed as a non-linear mutual causality. To use an analogy, volitional formations—acting like a riverbed—provide directionality to consciousness, which is like the river water, directing it toward specific objects. Concurrently, the currently flowing water (consciousness) continuously erodes the riverbed (volitional formations), carving out new channels. Ultimately, a mutual causality occurs wherein present cognitive activities alter or reinforce deep-seated latent tendencies. Additionally, the possibility of non-linear causality is demonstrated through the explanation of the growth of consciousness. Utilizing the botanical metaphors found in the suttas, karma (kamma) can be viewed as the field (the accumulation of past actions), consciousness (viññāṇa) as the seed (the subject of cognition), and craving (taṇhā) as the moisture (present desire). Consciousness derives its momentum not only from past karmic force but also from the real-time nourishment supplied by present craving. Therefore, regulating present craving restrains the growth of consciousness, which serves as evidence that consciousness operates within a non-linear causal framework.
In addition, this paper introduces the non-linear causality of contact (phassa). Contact is an event established by the convergence of three elements: the sense organs (indriya), sense objects (ārammaṇa), and consciousness (viññāṇa). It is distinguished from mere physical contact by the essential intervention of consciousness, serving as the primary gateway to the entire experiential world. Utilizing the ‘Madhupiṇḍika-sutta’, this study explains how the cognitive process flowing from ‘phassa→vedanā→perception→thought→papañca’ operates as a feedback loop. Although this formulation is not standardized within the Twelve Links, it is an invaluable model of dependent origination that illustrates how mental proliferation occurs and gives rise to suffering. Moreover, the components of mentality (nāma—feeling, perception, intention, contact, attention) overlap with the elements of contact-dependent origination, further implying the interdependent nature of the Twelve Links.
Furthermore, in discussing the non-linear causality of feeling (vedanā), this paper shows that the intervention of right mindfulness (sammā-sati) between feeling and craving (taṇhā) can induce a non-linear reversal. Drawing insights from the ‘Mahānidāna-sutta’ of the Dīgha Nikāya, the study also elucidates the non-linear causality operating among craving, existence (bhava), and birth-and-death (jāti-jarāmaraṇa).
Through this non-linear reinterpretation of each element within the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination, the following conclusions are derived. First, dependent origination is not a linear chain where B succeeds only after A concludes; rather, it is a dynamic system of interdependence wherein constituent elements exchange mutual feedback to sustain the entire structure. Drawing upon contemporary systems theory, this study clarifies that the interdependence between consciousness and mentality-materiality, as well as the cyclical structure between ignorance and taints, constitutes a non-linear feedback loop that reproduces suffering. This liberates dependent origination from the deterministic framework of ‘causality spanning three lifetimes’(三世兩重因果) and provides a foundation for understanding it as a reversible, moment-to-moment process capable of change.
Second, each link of the Twelve Links must be interpreted not as a biological genesis, but as a process of deepening psychological and cognitive distortion. 'Ignorance and volitional formations' represent unconditional latent tendencies and structural conditions operating at a pre-conscious level. 'Consciousness and mentality-materiality' do not denote a simple mind-body dichotomy, but rather a field of cognition where subject and object mutually condition one another. 'The six sense bases, contact, and feeling' represent the process through which external stimuli are amplified and distorted via subjective intervention, while 'craving, clinging, and existence' mark the stage of karmic consolidation where these distortions solidify to form a specific ego-identity. Finally, 'birth and aging-and-death' embody the totality of existential suffering that inevitably ensues when the constructed identity manifests in concrete events.
Third, understanding dependent origination non-linearly logically secures the possibility of liberation through spiritual practice. If dependent origination were linear and deterministic, there would be no escape from the causal chain until the first cause, ignorance, was utterly destroyed. However, if dependent origination is a non-linear feedback system, introducing a new practice-based condition—namely, mindfulness—at the interval between feeling and craving, or at the exact moment of contact, can reverse the trajectory of the entire system.
In conclusion, the Buddha’s doctrine of dependent origination is a non-linear causality that affirms human volition, effort, and the potential for transformation. By interpreting the Twelve Links through the lens of non-linear causality, this study demonstrates that the doctrine of dependent origination is not confined to ancient metaphysics, but remains a universal wisdom capable of dialogue with modern psychology and complexity science. This interpretation offers the hope that “small changes can transform the entire system”, providing a logical foundation for how mindfulness in ordinary, daily life can culminate in the monumental leap of enlightenment.
