This dissertation examines how Cheongheo Hyujeong (淸虛 休靜, 1520–1604), under the historical conditions in which Neo-Confucianism had become the state ideology after the founding of Joseon and policies of suppressing Buddhism while promoting Confucianism were institutionally reinforced, reestablished the legitimacy and practical order of Buddhist practice. It does so through an analysis of the editorial arrangement and sequence of Samgagwigam
Previous scholarship on Hyujeong has produced substantial achievements in several areas, including the harmonization of the Three Teachings, dharma lineage and dharma orthodoxy, Seon thought, Ganhwa Seon, yeombul practice, and studies on the individual sections of Seongagwigam (禪家龜鑑), Yugagwigam (儒家龜鑑), and Dogagwigam (道家龜鑑). However, it is difficult to say that these studies have advanced to the point of reading Samgagwigam as a whole within a single theoretical relation of practice. The ideological significance of the differences between the base text and variant editions, as well as the question of how Samgagwigam as a whole orders the premise of practice, the order of understanding, and the culmination of practice, has not yet been sufficiently elucidated.
This dissertation does not regard Samgagwigam as a compilation that simply places the three sections of the Three Teachings side by side. Rather, it argues that Samgagwigam is a text in which mid-Joseon Buddhism reorganized the inner order of practice through editorial arrangement and sequence in the process of reestablishing its own legitimacy and practical system. To this end, the dissertation takes the base text and variant editions of Samgagwigam as its primary materials and examines the separately circulated edition of Seongagwigam as comparative material. Through philological comparison and analysis of editorial arrangement and sequence, it clarifies how the practical order of Samgagwigam is formed in relation to the differences between the base text and variant editions and the separately circulated Seongagwigam.
First, this dissertation examines the intellectual-historical background of the interaction among the Three Teachings in mid-Joseon, the actual conditions of Joseon Buddhism, and the achievements and limitations of pre-Hyujeong discourses on the reconciliation of Buddhism and Confucianism. Through this discussion, it shows that the historical conditions under which Samgagwigam emerged were closely connected with the need for Buddhism to reestablish its own legitimacy and order of practice within a Confucian-centered society. It also examines Hyujeong’s consciousness of dharma lineage and demonstrates that the succession of the Linji dharma lineage functioned not merely as a genealogical claim but as a criterion for understanding the orthodoxy and direction of practice.
The dissertation then analyzes the intention behind the compilation of Samgagwigam and the principles of its editorial arrangement. It points out the limitations of reading Dogagwigam, Yugagwigam, and Seongagwigam as separate and isolated texts, and instead argues that the three sections perform different functions within Samgagwigam: the recognition of the possibility of practice, the ordering of the workings of the mind and the discipline of study, and the transition from understanding to the culmination of practice. Dogagwigam shows the dimension in which the possibility of practice is recognized through the sequence linking “that which exists” (yumul, 有物), the Dao, and mind. Yugagwigam orders the workings of the mind and the discipline of study through the arrangement of mibal (未發), ibal (已發), gyegu (戒懼), sindok (愼獨), geundok (謹獨), and hamyang (涵養). Seongagwigam reveals the process by which understanding is transformed into practice through the transition of understanding, the division between understanding and practice, and the culmination in manifold practices.
Next, the dissertation examines how the theoretical order of practice in Samgagwigam unfolds through Buddhist points of contact. In Dogagwigam, it analyzes how yumul is transformed into mind and thereby how the possibility of practice is recognized. In Yugagwigam, it shows that the Confucian discourse of self-cultivation, through the ordering of the workings of the mind and the discipline of study, can form a point of contact with the Huayan understanding of totality. In Seongagwigam, it examines how scriptural study and yeombul are not excluded but are positioned within the direction of Seon practice, and how Ganhwa Seon is presented as the central culmination of Hyujeong’s view of practice. Through this analysis, the dissertation confirms that the language of the Three Teachings in Samgagwigam does not remain at the level of an equal listing of doctrines, but is reorganized within a Buddhist-centered order of practice.
Finally, the dissertation synthesizes Hyujeong’s view of practice as presented in Samgagwigam. For Hyujeong, doctrine, Seon, and yeombul are not three unrelated gates of practice, but practical paths reorganized within a Seon-centered view of practice. In this context, “one thing” (ilmul, 一物) functions as the ground from which practice begins and unfolds, while doctrine and yeombul are not rejected but embraced within a Seon-centered order of practice. Samgagwigam may therefore be understood as a work in which Hyujeong reestablished the relationship among doctrine, Seon, and yeombul in a Seon-centered manner and textually articulated his theory of practice by grounding it in ilmul as the principle of practice.
In conclusion, this dissertation does not read Samgagwigam merely in terms of the outward form of the harmonization of the Three Teachings. Rather, by examining the differences in editorial arrangement between the base text and its variant editions and their relation to the separately circulated Seongagwigam, it demonstrates that the premise of practice, the order of understanding, and the culmination of practice are organized into a Buddhist-centered order of practice. Hyujeong’s understanding of the Three Teachings does not remain at the level of an equal listing of Buddhist, Daoist, and Confucian doctrines; rather, it advances toward a Buddhist-centered reestablishment of the ground and direction of practice. In this sense, Samgagwigam is not only a text that reveals the central axis of practice in Hyujeong’s Buddhist thought, but also an important intellectual-historical document showing how mid-Joseon Buddhism reestablished the ground of its own existence and the direction of practice.
