This study examines the ways in which Japanese generals (waejang), surrendered Japanese soldiers (hangwae), and Korean captives (piroin)—figures that emerged from the Imjin War—were portrayed throughout late Joseon literature, and investigates the intentions behind these representations. By analyzing how the characterization of the "Other," spawned by the war, mediated the process, this research illuminates the narrative trajectory through which post-war Joseon society mended systemic fissures and redefined its ruling ideology. Unlike previous studies that have focused on the accumulation of external knowledge about Japan, this research highlights the internal perception of Japan within Joseon society, mediated by the war.
It investigates how the images of these Others were distorted and consumed according to the ruling order and contemporary social demands amidst the systemic crisis brought about by the war. The study covers the period from the outbreak of the Imjin War in 1592 to the eve of the 1875 Unyo Incident, a turning point in Japan-perception frameworks. The analysis encompasses documentary literature—such as veritable records (sillok), diaries, envoy travelogues, and epitaphs/biographies—as well as narrative literature including unofficial historical tales (yadam), biographical tales, and novels. The discussion follows a trajectory of otherness shifting from the outside to the inside: Japanese generals as "external Others," surrendered soldiers as "boundary Others," and Korean captives as "internal Others."
First, Japanese generals were shaped according to contemporary political interests and narrative objectives. Official records varied in their representation based on the compiler’s stance: the Seonjo sillok utilized Konishi Yukinaga’s deceptive negotiations to hold the pro-peace faction accountable, while the Seonjo sujeong sillok transformed Kato Kiyomasa into a "righteous enemy commander" to exonerate detained officials. Later narrative literature transformed these figures into functional tools highlighting the loyalty of Joseon heroes or transcendent nemeses—a defense mechanism to mend historical trauma and recover moral superiority within the literary imagination.
Second, surrendered Japanese soldiers were distorted into a dual layer of "potential danger" and "civilized loyal subjects." While the early Joseon court pragmatically adopted their military skills, their post-war formation of exclusive local groups and participation in the Yi Gwal Rebellion marked them as uncontrollable risk factors. Literature reflected this, depicting them either as "objects of anxiety" revealing murderous intent or as "civilized subjects" repaying Joseon’s grace. This reveals that Joseon’s embrace of these soldiers was not an absolute acceptance, but a conditional approval contingent upon conformity to the ruling logic.
Third, Korean captives were reduced to "internal Others" who blurred the boundary between ally and enemy. Envoy travelogues from the post-war period thoroughly otherized those who refused repatriation, defining them as "turncoats" who forsook heavenly ethics and the loyalty between sovereign and subject. In literature, those who embodied enemy customs were characterized as threats to the system, while those who adhered to Joseon’s ethical norms were approved as ideal returnees. As Japanese swordsmanship became a subject of cultural enjoyment in the 18th century, a differentiation emerged, where captives who acquired such foreign arts were positively affirmed as "transmitters of Japanese swordsmanship."
Fourth, the memory of the war was appropriated as a tool of ruling discourse. When Western Learning emerged as a new threat, Japanese generals were summoned as heretics to provide a rationale for rejecting heterodoxy. The surrendered general Kim Chung-seon was appropriated by intellectuals as a symbol of assimilation (hyanghwa) and by his descendants as a means to invalidate the limitations of their origins. The return of female captives was appropriated to strengthen the patriarchal order by concealing the state’s incompetence behind individual women’s conduct. The state-male coalition sought to restore the order collapsed by the war by thoroughly marginalizing these women under the pretext of transgression of chastity (hwejeol).
In conclusion, behind the characterization of the Other in late Joseon literature, mechanisms of exclusion and inclusion stand in taut opposition. This study is significant in that it confirms the contemporary orientation to seek systemic stability by literarily reconstructing the crisis of reality, amidst the contradictions of post-war society that could not be managed by blind exclusion or wholesale inclusion alone. Through this, it elucidates that the perception of Japan in the late Joseon period was not merely an outward-looking gaze, but an internal mechanism for reinforcing the ruling order by defending and controlling the internal fissures of the system.
