This study examines the acting approach to the character Uri Savir in J. T. Rogers' Oslo (2016), a play based on the historical Oslo Peace Accords between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) from 1992 to 1993. Since characters in Post-Epic Theater are presented as beings who act not according to personal emotions but according to social conditions, there are limitations in making a character's social attitudes convincingly visible on stage through the psychological internalization methods of realistic acting alone. This study therefore sought a practical methodology for embodying the social conditions of Post-Epic Theater characters through physical language, by combining Brecht's concept of Social Gestus with Rudolf von Laban's Effort analysis system.
The play employs various theatrical devices—including historicization, a narrator's direct address to the audience, and episodic scene construction—to encourage critical reflection rather than emotional immersion. This study approaches Oslo from the perspective of Post-Epic Theater, a contemporary dramatic form that inherits the political and social critique of Brechtian epic theater while incorporating the performativity and audience participation expanded by post-dramatic theater.
Using Katie Mitchell's method of compiling Back History Lists, the study constructs the character's back story through a list of facts, a list of questions, reasoned answers to key questions, and improvisation exercises. Based on this foundation, the study analyzes Savir's dramatic actions and establishes his super-objective. Savir is defined as a character who embodies national pragmatism, and his attitudinal variations according to social relationships are examined through the lens of Brecht's Social Gestus.
To translate Savir's social attitudes into concrete physical language, this study introduces Rudolf von Laban's Effort analysis system. Savir's social attitudes are divided into three aspects—extreme rationalism, national pragmatism, and hierarchical awareness with relational shifts—and appropriate Effort actions are applied to each. The Press action visualizes Savir's suppression of emotional disturbance in the face of external threats, while the Wring action embodies the internal containment of unexpressed anger. The Glide action reveals the strategic flexibility emerging during the transition from hostility to cooperation, and the Flick action captures the tactical cultivation of personal rapport in informal settings. The Float action physically represents Savir's deferential compliance toward superiors, while the Punch action manifests his direct confrontation with peers. Through the contrast and transition of these Effort actions, the study demonstrates how Savir's Gestus shifts fluidly according to the hierarchy of relationships.
Furthermore, this study explores how Gestus expands through the dimensions of temporality and corporeality. Variations in Savir's walking tempo and the deliberate placement of silence between utterances extend Gestus in the temporal dimension. The physical transition from a tensely condensed body standing firm against Kuri's threat to a relaxed, open body while walking together extends Gestus in the corporeal dimension. Through these expansions, the study aimed to design a viewing experience in which the audience could actively perceive the social conditions and political context surrounding Savir.
This study was based on the performance of the role of Uri Savir in the M.F.A. Project production of Oslo, staged from December 14 to 16, 2023, at the Lee Hae-Rang Art Theater, Dongguk University. While this study is limited in that it is grounded in the performance experience of a single researcher, and that the actual audience responses to the Effort-based Gestus embodiment could not be empirically verified, it is hoped that it will serve as a practical case of character creation that embodies a character's social conditions through physical language within the contemporary theatrical form of Post-Epic Theater. Furthermore, the Effort-based framework of Gestus analysis proposed in this study is expected to serve as a reference point for actors engaging with similar theatrical forms in the future.
