While previous scholarship has predominantly focused on the phenomenological “what”—identifying the binary differences between traditional sati and contemporary mindfulness—such approaches often fail to provide a structural explanation for the “why” behind this transition. Many existing studies remain limited to analyzing early clinical models like MBSR from decades ago, leaving the theoretical landscape relatively stagnant. Moving beyond these fixed perspectives, this study posits that mindfulness is not a static technique but a dynamic, evolving tradition undergoing constant self-renewal. The primary objective of this research is to update the theoretical discourse of the field by elucidating the contemporary drivers of recontextualization through the lens of recent postmodern and post-Buddhist narratives.
To achieve this, the study employs a dual methodology of textual analysis and socio-historical investigation. It begins by re-examining the hierarchical identity of sati within the Pāli Nikāya and subsequently deconstructs the mechanisms of medicalization and scientific rationalism that catalyzed the formation of modern clinical mindfulness. Crucially, this research adopts the latest theoretical frameworks—most notably Ann Gleig (2019) on postmodern pluralities and Ville Husgafvel (2023) on post-Buddhist lineages—to analyze the emergent stages of diversification. Furthermore, it incorporates the work of Brian D. Somers (2024) to provide a comparative analysis of the unique "institutional re-religionization" currently occurring in Korean Buddhism, where secular trends are being re-absorbed into traditional monastic structures.
The core significance of this study lies in redefining the transition from sati to mindfulness not as a corruption of tradition, but as a planned "creative evolution" and a "modern upāya (skillful means)" designed to align with the modern episteme. By demonstrating how mindfulness is branching into diverse pluralities—ranging from justice-oriented activism and digital platforms to the institutional branding of “K-Meditation”—this research elaborates the inner logic of survival for traditional wisdom in a post-secular society. Ultimately, I propose that the relationship between tradition and modernity be viewed within the expanded horizon of “Post-Buddhist Continuity.” This hermeneutic update serves as a vital academic touchstone for understanding how meditative practice continuously re-structures itself to respond to the multifaceted crises of the contemporary world.
