The feature film Anonymous Guest (Nanmu) examines how online violence, generated and amplified within the structure of internet-based personal broadcasting, destabilizes an individual’s life and relationships. This dissertation is a practice-based creative study that investigates how a director’s approach to film acting direction is concretized through specific criteria and language in the actual production process of Anonymous Guest (Nanmu), focusing on its planning, shooting, editing, and sound design.
Film production is generally fragmented into multiple shots and takes, and the order of shooting often does not correspond to the narrative sequence. Under these conditions, it is difficult to maintain the continuity of a character’s emotional state by simply demanding emotional results from actors. Therefore, this study examines how Stanislavski’s concepts of objective and physical action, Stella Adler’s given circumstances and imagination, and Sanford Meisner’s notions of the reality of doing and response can be translated into the director’s language of acting direction. Based on this framework, the study analyzes the character construction, acting direction methods, representative scenes, and actors’ reflective statements in Anonymous Guest (Nanmu), with a focus on given circumstances, prior circumstances, objectives, physical actions, inner states, and inner monologues.
The analysis shows that the acting direction in Anonymous Guest (Nanmu) functioned more effectively when the director first clarified the conditions of the scene and the character’s objective, and then translated them into physical actions and inner monologues, rather than directly demanding emotions from the actors. Kim Se-a was constructed as a character who is attacked, yet attempts to control and endure the situation, while Ppase was constructed as a character who seeks to dominate the scene by calculating the flow of the broadcast and the responses of viewers. These character settings provided the actors with clear criteria for understanding why their characters speak, remain silent, or respond in particular ways in each scene. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that even within a limited production environment, a director can establish shared criteria and language for acting direction with actors, thereby concretely organizing the emotional flow of scenes and the continuity of acting performance.
