For childcare teachers working with young children with disabilities, becoming a teacher is not a fixed state defined by qualifications or roles but an ongoing process shaped through relationships and entanglements. However, little research has explored how these teachers experience their work with young children with disabilities and how they come to understand and construct the meaning of becoming a teacher. Grounded in the methodology of narrative inquiry, this study explored the process of becoming a teacher experienced by childcare teachers for young children with disabilities.
The participants were four homeroom teachers who held qualifications for childcare teachers for young children with disabilities and were currently working in specialized childcare centers or inclusive childcare centers. The participants represented diverse age groups ranging from their twenties to forties, with total childcare experience spanning from four to twenty-two years. They also differed in their experience working with young children with disabilities and in the types of institutions in which they were employed. Data were collected through three individual interview sessions with each participant based on Seidman’s three-stage in-depth interviewing approach, as well as through the researcher’s journal. The collected data were repeatedly read, reconstructed, and analyzed according to the procedures of narrative inquiry.
The findings revealed that the process of becoming a teacher experienced by childcare teachers for young children with disabilities unfolded through three interconnected processes in which temporality, sociality, and place were intertwined.
First, teachers experienced a shift in perspective and an expansion of values through reflection. Confronted with unprepared encounters with young children with disabilities, they reflected on feelings of guilt and responsibility and gradually transformed the ways they viewed the children. This shift in perspective led to the development of values centered on respect, shaped through the passage of time and the accumulation of relationships with the children.
Second, teachers experienced a period of enduring amid challenges and uncertainty. They remained committed to their roles despite difficulties encountered in the childcare process, relational conflicts with children, parents, and colleagues, and insufficient institutional support. This period of instability and endurance became a driving force for reconstructing the meaning of becoming a teacher within the unique context of childcare for young children with disabilities.
Third, teachers recognized professionalism and moved toward learning. As they encountered the gap between the professional expertise required in practice and their own perceived capabilities, they came to recognize the need for continuous learning. In particular, despite structural constraints such as fragmented qualification systems, their desire to respond more effectively to the needs of children motivated them to continue learning. Although each teacher’s life experiences and professional journey differed, they continuously reconstructed the meaning of becoming a teacher through experiences and relationships rather than through qualifications alone.
The findings of this study provide valuable insights into understanding the process of becoming a teacher experienced by childcare teachers through the entanglement of temporality, sociality, and place. Furthermore, the findings may contribute to the development of support systems for teachers who choose to work with young children with disabilities within fragmented educational environments.
